I think I got a different pedal....  (By Rican James)

I was very excited to receive this pedal after watching how versatile it was, but when I first plugged it in, I noticed it made really screeching noise. And that was when it was SWITCHED OFF; my first complaint is that it is NOT TRUE BYPASS, at least mine isn't.

Second is, I know you are supposed to mold around the oscillations behind your guitar, but unless you're chugging out a constant sound from you guitar you will get very VERY unpleasant squealing behind EVERYTHING. When dialing in a nice overdrive you get some rich fuzz-drive like tones, but if you want any fuzz tones at all, you get hiss and squeals, it's really disappointing.

My Third big issue with this ordeal of a pedal is that I have attempted to contact blackout effectors several times about my true bypass issue, but lo and behold, I have not heard anything back from them. It has been nearly 2 months and I email them once a week just about.

Overall I am extremely disappointed, maybe my unit is defective, I hope that is the case, but otherwise beware the uncontrollable squeal.

Please don't let me deter you if you really want this pedal, but beware there are some unwanted issues that can come with this puppy. (Posted on 11/1/15)

I remember when I first heard Andy's demo of this fuzz, it knocked my socks off, this thing sounded so good I knew I had to have it, and believe me when I say it sounds just as awesome in person.
There are so many tonal options when you get around to not only tweaking the knobs of the bear, but your guitar's controls as well. I've noticed that the texture of the oscillations can get even crazier if you use high output pickups, and just as stated in the demo, it cleans up nicely when you roll back your guitar's volume knob.

As stated in the previous comments, this pedal sounds best being first in your effects chain and in my experience sounds better with other true bypass pedals.
I put my Bad Monkey OD after it and noticed significant tonal change, so I put my CM2 OD after it, and the tone remained unchanged. I love this pedal and it's one of my purchases I have no regrets about

Review of Blackout Effectors Fuzz Bear  (By Jpow)

Blackout Effector's FUZZ BEAR is my absolute favorite new pedal. My pedalboard is full of stone cold classics, but this addition is getting a lot of use since I bought it a few months ago. Okay, first, it's a great fuzz pedal. An "everything I could want" range of fuzz. Secondly, the uniqueness of the wild roars and oscillations I can get out of this thing are wickedly amazing and simply super fun to play around with. I only found about proguitarshop because it is the only place you can find the FUZZ BEAR (I had tried going straight to Blackout Effectors for it). I was hesitant about leaving a review because I wanted it to be my little secret. However, when proguitarshop asked me I couldn't say no because they have excellent deals on the Greatest pedal inventory I have ever seen. (I do not work for either of these companies. I'm just a big fan of their work) The fact that FUZZ BEAR (and I believe all of Blackouts pedals) is built in Asheville, NC really makes me super proud to support them. Many thanks to Blackout Effectors and proguitarshop for putting out such a great product! (Posted on 3/27/15)
Outstanding  (By NoelEiffe)

As others have noted, this is a "first in chain" fuzz, in front of buffered pedals. Started there, and it sounds so good, no need to move it around.

Rich, customizable fuzz, sounds great through a Marshall with Fender single coils as well as Les Paul. The Sag control sends it into deep haywirey space. But the bias control offers finer grained control.

Across the range of tone controls and volumes, the pedal changes dramatically, and I really like that. It's very tweak able but not as difficult to control as say a Fuzz Factory.

My favorite sounds are in that "big rock" vein, rich robust rock tones you might hear in a great GbV tune.

Really like this pedal. So many fuzzes, so little time: but this is what I need in my rig for practical rock tones. (Posted on 3/26/15)

Tis thing is one of the easiest fuzzies to use with many tones available, including the great old MKII Bender sound, a little more low end but its there and shining!

Then you have control over oscillation using the sag/bias or your volume knob. Like to be 1st in the chain and pairs well with a wah as all fuzz seems to do. I give her a 9.5/10 simply because it does not get you laid, at least yet, its early days ;) (Posted on 1/30/15)

Blackout Effectors Fuzz Bear

The Fuzz Bear from Blackout Effectors is a brand spankin’ new fuzz from our friends in North Carolina. What’s in a name? Well, my friends, Bears appears tame, but cross it, and it will maul your signal within inches of its life.

The heart of the circuit is a Tone Bender MkII, and it is certainly capable of delivering tones of that nature. One of the suggested settings is setting every knob to noon and letting ‘er rip. And if that’s what you want, great! However, we all know you’re not checking this out for standard fuzz tones, and if it’s atypical fuzz you want, the Bear has it in spades.

Unlike a Tone Bender, five knobs adorn the face of the Fuzz Bear—Range, Bias, Sag, Fuzz and Level. Level and Fuzz are pretty self-explanatory, so I’ll leave you with this: the Bear has an extremely loud roar; that is, the pedal has tons of volume on tap, more than you could ever want. For this reason, the Level control is great at completely saturating the next pedal in the chain, if you’re the dirt stacking type.

The three remaining knobs—all on the top row—are Range, Bias and Sag. These are the Bear’s roar, teeth and claws. The Range control is arguably the most important one, as it serves several functions. At some settings, the Range knob set fully counterclockwise allows for maximum signal to reach the transistors, allowing for some truly gnarly fuzz tones. The middle of the dial is the Bear at its tamest, while more clockwise settings lean the tone out and make it really nasty.

The Sag control determines how much juice you want reaching the transistors. When the control is set counterclockwise, the circuit receives the standard nine volts. Turning the knob reduces the voltage and changes the character of the fuzz. This knob is highly interactive with the others, and the sound varies with even a slight turn. It’s the salt of the pedal; apply with caution.

If Sag wasn’t enough voltage-dropping goodness for you, try the Bias control—it offers a fine tuning of the voltage adjustment. In this regard, it gates the signal pretty heavily in more extreme settings. Turning it clockwise enhances the effect.

When asked nicely, the Fuzz Bear goes from a great traditional fuzz to a foam-mouthed snarling and spitting noise beast. Nothing is safe from its path of wanton destruction. That said, the pedal is highly customizable to your axe and pickup type.

The Blackout Effectors Fuzz Bear is hand-made, one at a time, in North Carolina. It is wired for true bypass and accepts a standard 9v Boss-style center-negative power adapter. The manual suggests using a power supply rated for at least 50 milliamps, so it is isolated power supply ready.
