Underrated  (By Tom Park)

The secret to getting a usable tone out of this pedal is to set the tone to about 9 o' clock. It is a surprisingly transparent pedal at low gain settings and can be used as a good overdrive. The lack of control over the tone bothers me a bit and I would gladly pay an extra 20 bucks to have an independent mid, treble, and bass knob with all analog circuitry. I'd also like a bit more gain on tap too as notes can be easily choked out.

This was the first pedal I ever bought, in 8th grade. I then became more of a tone snob and moved on to expensive valve-driven overdrives. Then, last year, I was cleaning up and plugged this in with a Deluxe Reverb. By keeping the tone 3/4 down and the level very high, I though it sounded better than a Mad Professor pedal. I'm using every night to play james, gigs and all, and I've gotten people asking what the secret to my warm tone is. The stock Taiwan DS-1, take a bow. Just use the tone control! (Posted on 9/19/14)

This pedal is legendary but I think it is only because of the price. Sure it is decent in a band mix but by itself, it sounds kinda cheesy and nasally. Its either a tone you like or don't like. You can mod it but why not look for another pedal if you don't like this pedals tone? There are literally hundreds of distortion pedals all with unique character. I do like how this pedal works with other pedals like chorus and delay. Buy this pedal if you're not too picky about tone or if your picky and this happens to be the tone you've had your ear set on. Solid pedal. A cornerstone for many famous rock tones.  (By Gitfiddle76)

You would be surprised how many famous players use this basic pedal modded or not in their arsenal. The good: built like a rock. Nice crunchy bright rock tones. Plenty of usable settings from low gain crispyness to higher gain roar. It's pretty bright so it can jump you out in front of the mix really well. Plays well with other pedals. The bad: It is rather bright so if you like darker tones it's probably not for you. Gets fizzy at top gain settings. I feel this pedal is at its best when its stacked with another overdrive to fatten up the tone a bit. Overall its a beast on its own for $50 (Posted on 3/20/14)

I bought one of these just to mess around with and considering it's cost it gets the job done. While this pedal was a main staple for nearly a decade it has lost much of it appeal due in part to some of Boss' decisions and the increased availability of specialty effects. Where this pedal really earns it's keep is in terms of modability. Any musicians interested in modding can certainly get a lot of use out of it even if they are a beginner. If you want something to get your started in pedal circuits, this is a perfect start, if you want an inexpensive pedal with good versatility then this is great too, but I found it is not for me. This was my first pedal. It definitely worked for what I needed 8 years ago. Now that I'm playing better and have a better ear for tone, I can say that it's tough to get anything particularly pleasant out of the pedal. It has harsh clipping and is extremely bright and tinny past 9 o clock. Pulling back on the distortion doesn't do much for harshness. But for 30-40 dollars, you are getting a decent deal. Also, there are some pedal tweakers out there who can work sorcery on this pedal and make it sound seriously awesome. In summary: Cheap, adequate, durable. (Posted on 8/7/13)

It's not the most sophisticated or dynamic pedal in the world, but it does what it does well: 90's riffing sounds great, the tone pot is pretty wide ranging, it's built like a tank and can even do some low drive stuff pretty well. (Posted on 7/1/13)
