If you're asking yourself why you'd pay this price for an oil can delay when (for a few bucks more) you could move on to a multi-mode delay with an oil can included, the answer is because this is the best sounding oil can delay on the market and its extended delay time and modulation features make for fantastic new sounds (Posted on 4/25/16)

I wasn't prepared for this pedal. I figured that I would kinda like it, but I bonded with it immediately! It's hard to describe why, so I'll just say I love it and it's favorite pedal right now. Chris stated that it reminds him of a Morricone soundtrack, and I heartily agree, but to me, it's a lot more than that. It stacks well with a lot of other pedals too. Catalinbread rules! I went ahead and bought this effect pedal thinking it's be a great effect for atmospheric soundscapes and uniquely unctuous and hazy echoes. However, while it was pretty cool, I found myself instantly wanting to play Spaghetti Western music - think Sergio Leone films, Ennio Morricone/composer. For some reason I felt the 'Adineko' is somewhat 'typecast' and excels in this particular sub-genre of music, and my imagination couldn't expand beyond this style when using this pedal. Therefore, I flipped it in a matter of days after it arrived. Certainly not a conventional sounding delay, and an acquired taste - not for me. Also, it has an annoying 'pop' when you click it on. Catalinbread really should address this issue! Same thing happens with my power-sensitive 'Belle Epoch', when set to TB mode. All in all, it's worth trying. You never know. It may be just the sound you're lookin' for. (Posted on 1/19/16)

First what I don’t like: the oh so noisy clankety clackety foot switch. We should be over these by now. And then there’s this very silly spot where one plugs in the power cable: on the side!!! - another thing we should be over by now - it’s the WRONG place! It’s annoying! And, talking about power, I like to feed my pedals with actual batteries for live performances. More and more manufacturers don’t allow for batteries anymore. It’s another little money savings for them I guess. I use rechargeable Lithium batteries and I never ever have any noise issues with my setup as well as no power chord on stage!

Now what I do like: I owned 3 Tel-Ray Oil Can Delays over time, alas those are only usable at home or for recording. I would never schlepp those on stage. That, I guess, was the idea behind putting out the Adineko. Does it sound like the real thing? I can answer this question with a very confident NO, it does not. There’s a certain ‘organic’ quality to a real mechanical device that cannot be duplicated by electronics. It can get more or less close to the original but that’s it - and that’s absolutely not a bad thing. Along its way those devices find their own voice, different yes, but nevertheless quite interesting - Adineko. It does things other ‘delay’ pedals don’t or can’t. It has character galore that some might like and others might not. Me, I like, even a lot. What it brings to the floor goes from subtle and hard to say what it is to sounds makes one think of mating whales > awesome! Too bad them pedals usually sit on the floor - this one begs for it to have it’s pots turned this or that way a bit while playing.

Resume: Adineko is NOT really a delay pedal, it’s more a spacey psychedelic kind of ambience evoking gadget - a pedal btw that works very well with others. I thought I might be able to replace two of my pedals with the Adineko, instead it became a new member of the family. (Posted on 12/18/15)

I love the oil can tone, however this pedal is also very flexible. Can be set for a fairly subtle effect if desired. I've never tried an actual oil can delay, but this sounds quite authentic to my ears. (Posted on 11/27/15)

Catalinbread Adineko Oil Can Delay

Not many people out there have heard of oil can delays, but for those of us who have, we remember them as lots and lots of effort with an end that justifies the means. The innards resemble an engine, but for your tone. And what a perfect analogy for the Catalinbread Adineko—a lovely digital take on the antiquated oil can delay, that will serve as an engine for your creativity.

Original oil can delays were even more unwieldy than tape echoes, because they involved an actual rotating drum filled with electrolytic oil through which the signal is passed. Of course, the idea of an effect that relies upon a fluid-filled vessel is totally impractical. Couple this with the relative rarity of these units, AND the fact that the oil is no longer legal to purchase, and you realize just how elusive this sound is.

The Adineko contains recreations of every parameter one could imagine from an old oil can unit. From oil thickness—Viscosity knob—to drum rotation speed—Timing knob—and playback head blend—Balance knob—everything about the Adineko nails the oil can experience.

A common complaint with old oil can units is that the delay time just isn’t long enough. Old units were slapback dream machines—and the Adineko still excels at this—but the delay time has been drastically expanded. And with great time comes great affect; the Adineko turns into a full-length dream machine with sloshy, shadowy repeats that lets the mojo bubble to the surface.

A self-oscillating Reverb knob can help the tone really blast off, so to speak, because the reverberation seamlessly interacts with the dark echoes and can power through them to oscillate and let the ambience take over.

The Adineko can be powered with up to 18 volts for exceptional headroom, which allows the Adineko to maintain its composure when hit with any number of pedals—something the original lacked, because the original oil can units predate any pedal effects.
