Not bad...but not great  (By Dave)

I've never owned an original echorec, and I've never heard one in person. I simply got this pedal because I heard it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. I've played around with it a while and I'm not impressed. Yes it sounds good...does it sound 200+ dollars good. Nope, does it dazzle me? Not really. I like a little subtle modulation in the delay, but out of the box it sounded like a bit to much. Want to turn the modulation down? Well you are in luck...get out a regular sized phillips screw driver and open up the box...and then..wait...go find the tiniest screw driver you can possibly find...(which may still not be tiny enough)...ok...go buy whatever size screw driver they say to buy in the manual...and while you are in there read what adjustment you need to make and BOOM, you have less or more modulation! It's just that easy. SERIOUSLY?! You couldn't stick one more knob on the front for modulation and move the light down? The gain control I get...that's set it and forget it. But the modulation amount? There surely wasn't a reason for this other than staying true to the original design. In essence, this is a one trick pony delay. Modulated delay at different time intervals and the possibility of a little swell in the delay. I'll keep it to have a good multi-head type delay to play around with as modeling of this doesn't even come close to the sound. But as far as a go to delay, nope. Needs more versatility. I much prefer the Bel Epoch which does have controls for the modulation. (Posted on 6/20/15)
Extraordinary Pedal!  (By Scotty)

I've never been some one who has used reverb or delay as part of my sound to any great extent. I had a Boss delay that did a great job, but, to my ear took the warmth out of the tone. I have amps that have nice reverbs, but, again, just not my thing.
The reason I started looking into delays again, was because I'm a big fan of Ry Cooder. His sound tracks and especially the album he made with Manual Galban, Mambo Sinuendo, which is drenched with vintage echo.
The Echorec seemed the most likely candidate after hours of research. Expensive, but I decided to take the plunge.
Very happy I did. Not only does this pedal nail many vintage echo tones, but it actually ADDS warmth to the tone. It is very touch responsive. It's great for conventional delay too. I'll be using it more than I expected! (Posted on 5/21/15)

I bought this pedal because my Line6 delay modeler will not give me the results I want when using the multihead delay function. Multihead delay is kinda my thing and so this pedal jumped out at me immediately. The 12 different settings offer a wide range of different timings for the delays, and you can tune this thing in to offer some really spacy and captivating sounds. I gave it 4s across the board because even though it is a quality product and offers a wide array of quality tones, it is a bit spendy and the fellow named snail who also gave a review said it best: "how close do you have to be to read 3/32" lettering that is written ABOVE the controls.....add that to a dim stage. Eventually you'll know what's where, except that the 12 postion head selector has NO detents, nor does the knob pointer accurately line up with the numbers. You are resigned to set the swell to 0, strike a note and count the repeats to be sure you get what you want"

In any case if you are as into multihead delay as I am, you have no other options but this pedal. No regrets here. (Posted on 5/3/15)

I love the sound of this pedal. I have a Boss DD5, MXR Carbon, DOD 585 and the echorec makes them all sound bad......how Catlinbread could've missed major essentials is beyond me......how close do you have to be to read 3/32" lettering that is written ABOVE the controls.....add that to a dim stage. Eventually you'll know what's where, except that the 12 postion head selector has NO detents, nor does the knob pointer accurately line up with the numbers. You are resigned to set the swell to 0, strike a note and count the repeats to be sure you get what you want. What fun!......but it sounds GREAT!
....and since it's rhythmic qualities are it's unique characteristic; wouldn't a tap tempo to sync have made it the ultimate? (Posted on 10/11/13)

The sound of this unit is without a doubt phenomenal. It is one of those rare effects that actually contributes to musical inspirations and ideas rather than merely adding aesthetic qualities to your existing compositions. I found myself quickly falling into new musical territory even the first time I sat down with the Echorec.

I have only one big gripe: The pedal sounds much nicer with my single-coil pickups than any of my humbuckers, and the design decision to make the gain pot internal needlessly complicates getting a commensurate tone on both guitars (since the active pickups obviously would sound best with less gain.) Surely adding another front-facing know would not have been to difficult.

Otherwise, an awesome addition! (Posted on 5/14/13)

So at first after playing for a few weeks with the Echorec, I was considering buying a new Delay, just because the Echorec didn't seem the magical to me. It seemed as if that it was very limited. But now I found the magic, and I spend hours on end on it. The real magic in the Echorec really is in the modulation, the magical vibrato leslie like sound, combined with the spacey swirly delay, gives you a whole new world of mysterious, epic, and limitless musical possibilities. I usually keep it on TB mode because the delay didn't have that sounds to my ears, on Buffered, it might not be the same for you, but this is just me. The pedal to me now, is just a fine work of art. It is so luscious and beautiful and at the same time eerie and mysterious. Now, if you just want clean delays, turn the modulation down, but for me, all the fun comes when you crank the modulation. Now the individual modes on the echorec are all unique in themselves. They each have a different rhythmic pattern, and some are more reverberated than others. Also, the delay time knob to me, is the most important part of the Echorec. With this, you have instant pitch shifting options, and can instantly create different rhythmical patterns after the different rhythmical patterns you already have. I think at first, I didn't like it because I was more overwhelmed than underwhelmed, but this is going to stay on my board until it breaks. Now the mix knob really isn't that useful to me, unless you want it 0% or 100%. Other than that, the differences really aren't huge. I usually keep the tone knob pushed all the way counter clockwise, for that more darker thick sounding delay. The program select for me usually ends up right back at 4 or 5. I keep the mix knob at noon, delay time somewhere between 1 and 3 o'clock, and the swell knob between 1 and 3 o' clock. It is really cool how chaotic this pedal can be when you crank the swell knob, of coarse I have no musical use for it that way, but it is fun to play with.
Conclusion: f*****g awesome! (Posted on 2/19/13)

Catalinbread Echorec

The Catalinbread Echorec gives you the sound of the classic, all-analog, magnetic drum echo unit put to use on such Pink Floyd epics as Echoes, Time and Interstellar Overdrive. This compact effect actually improves on the original with a much more reliable operation and new Delay Time control that gives you 40ms to a full second (versus a fixed 300ms). An internal trim pot allows you to adjust the randomness and intensity of the modulation the original Echorec is known for plus a gain adjustment for the vintage voiced buffered signal. Buffered bypass offers a trails feature and an extraordinary tone, even when the effect is off, and the internal switch allows you to choose buffered or true bypass. The 12-way Program Select control lets you select the sound of playback head 1 on its own as well as every possible 2,3 and 4 head combination. The Swell control gives you greater feedback for more repeats, while the Tone and Mix controls lets you shape the sound and the dry/effect ratio to your own preferences. The Catalinbread Echorec uses a 9v power supply, but it also can be used with an 18vDC supply for even better tone and definition.

Catalinbread Echorec Features:

    • 40ms - 1,000 msec. delay time
