RAH Pedal Rocks  (By Rudy)

I bought this when it was first released and I love it. I usually switch between this pedal and the Dirty Little Secret. What I love about the RAH pedal is the headroom, particularly if you run it with an 18v jack. I run it through the clean channel of a Lonestar and a Lonestar Special running in stereo. The cleans are crisp without being harsh and any pedal I run after it is enhanced. On its' own, I get just enough volume and grit to boost the upper mids to provide clean distortion without muddy lows. All in all, it is my favorite pedal. (Posted on 3/11/14)

What can I say but, WOW! I just got the Catalinbread RAH right here at ProGuitarShop and I don't even know how to begin! I'm completely blown! I'm lucky in a sense that this pedal sounded how it was intended to sound thru my rig! I'm currently playing thru a Marshall DSL15H head with an Egnater 1X12 cabinet loaded with a Celestion G12H 70th Anniversary speaker. I'm running the CB RAH into the Marshall's clean channel ( Classic Gain ) with Gain on 6 & Volume set to desired level. Tone controls are all set to 5 and Presence to 2 ( these settings are the normal standard Marshall knob settings from 0-10 not the inacurate Clock system ). RAH settings are: Master 4, Gain 10, Treble 4, Middle 6, Bass 4 ( Since the RAH is supposedly exactly like the way JP's HiWatt amp head is, these settings are also the normal 0-10 knob adjustments ). I'm also using some reverb via the awesome TC Electronic Hall Of Fame Reverb set on Room. Viola! JP's legendary tone at the RAH in 1970! Wow! Could not stop playing for 3 straight hours! The RAH designer Mr. Gee mentioned that it will make you want to play like JP style and I could not agree more! Catalinbread hit a home run with this pedal! Even if you're not a Zep fan, it will be hard for anyone that plays a tube amp to get a bad tone from the CB RAH. I'd suggest this pedal for players with more experience playing thru a tube amp otherwise beginners might not appreciate the dynamic response and touch sensitivity. The singing rich high end response of the CB RAH is un-freaking believable!! So happy with this pedal and it's absolutely a keeper! Worth every shinny penny! BTW, the guitars I played thru the RAH is a 2000 Gibson LP 1960 Classic with Seymour Duncan '59's, 2007 Gibson SG Standard with SD '59's, 2012 Epiphone DOT 335 with SD '59's and a vintage 1971 Univox Les Paul Custom copy with, you guessed it, SD '59's. And yes, you have to believe Mr. Gee about completely nailing JP's tone using the Herco Flex 75 pick!! And yes the skinnier/slinkier string gauge just completely nails it too! I used the same gauge/brand JP uses with my test which is the Ernie Ball Super Slinky .09-.42. I normally play the EB Regular Slinky .10-.46. Happy, happy, joy, joy!!! Thank you Catalinbread for releasing the RAH and specially to the master pedal guru designer extraordinaire Mr. Howard Gee! You sir are THE MAN! You made a believer in me! I can't believe I've waited this long to get this pedal! (Posted on 2/27/14)

What a tone machine. Extremely responsive. You can hear the character of your guitar and approach, nothing muffled. Just the right blend of tone and overdrive. Again,.... just right. Its one of those things that are hard to describe but you know it once you hear it. A class act. This pedal is indeed unique. Bravo Catalinbread! (Posted on 2/22/14)

Sounds really great with a Vox AC30. The only thing is -- Catalinbread says to set the Master Volume just above unity -- or volume without the pedal -- but the pedal doesn't come to life unless I open up the MV and the Gain to about 2 or 3 o'clock -- then it's BALLS... but when I click off the pedal, the clean sound is so quiet... so, for me, there is no easy switch between the RAH and anything else... which is not a problem really -- just turn the volume knob on the amp. Catlinbread, in the past has introduced some of the most innovative and just downright good sounding pedals that I have ever owned or used. But along with a string of pedals also made by others as well, this one does nothing whatsoever for me. It's gotten to the point now (with pedals) where they are just starting to look like visual art, and the sound is not even a close second! I remember the 70's well! There were only a hand full of pedals, and pedal makers. But there were more than a few highly skilled guitar players that got along just fine with an old tape echo and a wah pedal. I guess what I am asking is; who's really winning here? The guitar players, or the people selling these o so pretty boxes that all sound the same? (Posted on 9/14/13)

Really love this pedal (note two earlier reviews) and got to play it through a friends 18 Watt Marshall with a greenback, just using a standard Strat and it was completely amazing: no pre-boost for single coils needed. Stellar tone and dynamics without any boost or gain pedal on before the RAH to jack the Strat signal. I guess it just depends on the rig you're using. With a Blues Jr the Strat needs a boost before the RAH to really work for me. I did get the RAH for my Les Paul and to get a 1970-ish Jimmy Page thing going and it does that very well. Made for humbuckers!  (By Abbacus)

I should add that this pedal really excels and is probably at it's best with a Les Paul, or other humbucker-equiped guitar. I use a Joe Bonamassa LP that has Bustbuckers and use the volume knobs and PU selector to create different dynamics. Strats, or other single coil guitars need some kind of boost to hit the RAH where it lives, as it's made for humbuckers and loves PAF's (non-super higfh output) the best I think. Haven't tried it with P90's yet. I really love the RAH pedal but suspect some people might have some problems riding this wild horse! Catlinbreads' website has downloadable user Manuals as well as lots of info. PGS has the better shipping and customer service than anyone out there so if you just can't make a pedal work for you you can return it but you probably won't if you crave that old-school, early Jimmy Page Hiwatt sound and dynamic playing style! Great, pro-gigging pedal for Hiwatt/Page flavors and more  (By Abbacus)

This pedal gets you really close to Pages' Royal Albert Hall sound and dynamics with a Fender amp! But it's great for using at the end of your dirt pedal line as it stacks so very well with other pedals. I have no problem using it with Strats, but I have a DLS III, a Fulltone OCD, and a DOD YM 308 ahead of it in my signal chain. A very dynamic, touch sensitive pedal that has me inspired. I use it with a Fender Blues Jr and a Vibrolux Custom Reverb. Take the time to read the manual that you can download from the Catlinbread website: it's helpful. (Posted on 6/16/13)

A great pedal with a serious growl & fantastic tweakability. Very touch sensitive. Sweet on its own, but pairs nicely with a treble booster for classic rock & early metal tones. A winner from Catalinbread. (Posted on 8/26/12)

Catalinbread RAH

The Catalinbread RAH was built specifically to nail Jimmy Page's gigantic guitar tone from Led Zeppelin's legendary 1970 performance at Royal Albert Hall. At the time, in contrast to the Marshalls that he eventually came to be associated with, Page was using Hiwatt heads on stage, modified for a bit of extra gain. The resultant sound, as captured in the Royal Albert Hall concert DVD, is enormous, and the dynamic range from these high-headroom amplifiers is nearly symphonic. With the Catalinbread RAH overdrive pedal, our good friends at Catalinbread have managed to squeeze the distinctive "Jimmy Page Hiwatt" tone into a compact stompbox. Starting with their WIIO pedal as the foundation, and combining some elements of the Dirty Little Secret, Catalinbread delivers a unique overdrive pedal that will reward the player who appreciates articulation, real dynamics, and a very amp-like response. The Catalinbread RAH is an ideal foundation overdrive pedal; just set-and-forget, using your fingers and your guitar's volume knob to bring forth a spectrum of organic, blooming guitar tones.

Catalinbread RAH Features:

  • "Jimmy Page Hiwatt" tone in a compact stompbox
  • Huge dynamic range, amp-like response
  • Ideal foundation overdrive pedal
  • 3-band tonestack
  • Gain and Master controls
  • True Bypass switching
  • Handmade in Portland, OR USA
