JFET Boost is almost better than the Trem. And the Trem is rad.  (By Michael W.)

The Trem is everything you'd expect it to be, but what really surprised me is how responsive and amp-like the JFET boost circuit is when you turn the Trem off. Put a compressor in front of it and you can get some awesome saturated vintage amp tones.

Here's a short clip I recorded with it:

If you like your trem to go from subtle to over the top - this pedal is for you! What I especially like about this pedal is that it sounds very good with drive in front of it - unlike my Supa Trem. A winner by any measure. (Posted on 6/23/15)
Simple and pure, very nice.  (By Kim A)

A very nice reproduction of some of the classic trem sounds of the 60s to 70s and nice and simple too with lots of warmth and nothing unexpected from the controls or switching. The breakup as you push it is really nice and it always remains musical. I like! (Posted on 5/21/15)
Fast and Choppy  (By Big Jon)

Sounds are good and strong can get very fast and choppy, I like the input and output controls, all pedals need that option. Only beef is I wished the depth and speed controls had a more broader range of speed and intensity. To dial in a slow and less intense tremolo is touchy, but can kinda get there, it gets very intense quickly and the speed could be a bit slower IMO. Fast and Choppy is what it does best. Great tremolo pedal. Can't get much more choppy and intense than his one, but that's a good thing, in my book.

Love the input/preamp boost...truly sounds like it is part of your amp. Another great pedal from Catalinbread! (Posted on 5/2/15)

I'm an old guy who likes things simple. I only own 5 pedals. Tremolo has long been my favorite effect so I have tried many of them over the years. I'm going to start off with a cliche because I think it really applies in this case. Here goes: this trem is very amp-like. It really sounds and acts like it's part of the amp; more so than most of the ones I've tried. As intended, it has the sounds of an old Valco/Supro, and dare I say, Magnavox trem. Yeah, I know the Magnavox is a harmonic trem, different design, but I actually like the Valcoder more than some of the Maggie-type trems. The controls are simple, exactly like you would have on an amp trem. I like the added grit you get with the output control. Tap tempo - no, multiple waveforms - no, ramp speed adjustments - no. Look elsewhere if you want those features.

The pedal is a little darker sounding than some others. I have been using a Black Cat mini-trem for the last couple years. It has a tone control and can be brighter; more like a Fender, 60's amp trem than the Valcoder. I like both pedals a lot and they cover different sounds. I'll be keeping both for now.

Andy's demo, as usual, is very representative of the tones of this pedal, so if you like what you hear, give the Valcoder a try. (Posted on 4/22/15)

This creation from Catalinbread definitely conjures up the mojo and vibe of 60's style Valco and Supro tube tremelo's.
It is a very warm and dynamic pedal that sounds superb with any amp I've used it with. (Posted on 4/21/15)

Catalinbread Valcoder Tremolo

You may not know the name Valco, but you most assuredly know the names National, Supro, Airline and Oahu. These tube amps of the past sounded great and were all built by the Valco company of Chicago, Illinois. And they and contained the same tremolo circuit, now colloquially known as the Valco tremolo.

Leave it to Catalinbread, local masters of amp-in-a-box circuits, to extract the mojo from these old amplifiers and distill it into a stompbox of unimaginable quality.

The newly-designed Valcoder is more than just one sound; it’s the very essence of a Valco-built amp: There’s a chimey, gritty preamp section, and of course, that magnificent tremolo. The Valcoder does both equally well. There’s an Input knob, which can be used to juice the onboard JFET preamp for the sound of an ultra-clean amp on the verge of creamy saturated overdrive—perfect.

The tremolo circuit is 100 percent discreet and transistorized—it has everything you need and nothing you don’t. The Depth control ranges from full-on vintage bubbly amp tremolo to a hard square chop. What’s more, rolling the Depth control all the way back brings out only the preamp element, which turns the Valcoder into a delectable clean boost/preamp.

More headroom is achieved by running the Valcoder at a higher voltage; it accepts up to 18 volts and anything above nine.

Catalinbread Valcoder Tremolo features:

  • JFET preamp reacts like a real amp
  • Discreet tremolo circuit for crisp, toneful operation
  • Handmade in Portland, OR
  • True bypass
  • 9–18v operation
