A great sounding, easy to use delay  (By Lachlan)

I found it very easy to use, especially as I have never used delay effects much before. It sounds great and the features are excellent for the price. I like the uniqueness of it especially the degrade function. Its a great size and a good fit for anyone wanting something a bit different. (Posted on 4/9/16)
Tap tempo is a pain but the sounds are fantastic  (By Ryan)

This is one I'll probably not be using live since the tap tempo just doesn't make the pedal easy to turn on and off on the fly. Once you get into tap tempo mode (holding the footswitch down for a few seconds) and tap out your tempo, you have to hold it for another few seconds to disengage the tap tempo (but the tempo you set will stay, at least) before you can turn the pedal off. But, I knew when I bought this that it was only a single foot switch and wouldn't be as simple to tap, engage, and disengage as my other delays that have dedicated tap switches. I was getting ready to send it back or list it up for sale, but then I had a really inspiring session while jamming out some ambient stuff at home. I placed the Obscura after my TC Electronic T2 pedal, had the Obscura set to Reverse with tails on, and I discovered some really amazing and creatively inspiring sounds. I even did some stacked delay stuff that I've never done before, and I have to say, I really enjoyed the sounds I was getting out of the Obscura after giving it a chance. So, once I discovered how the pedal could fit with my sound and help me create new sounds, I decided it is definitely a keeper, though separate from my live board for now. (Posted on 7/24/15)
Excellent tweakable delay, and best value in the market at this pricepoint  (By BobbyNashville)

The Obscura is a great delay with lots of functionality, and I predict will change the market for digital delays. Why? Because for under $150, it has tap tempo, true bypass, subdivisions, stereo ins/outs, and multiple modes with sonic tweakability. These functions usually cost $250 or more. With 6 knobs and a tails switch, and a single footswitch for on/off and tap tempo, it's a smaller footprint than most delays as well and saves real estate. While it is digital and does not have analog dry through (neither do some of the other majors like Eventide due to the need for a converter to avoid phase cancellation), the sound quality is the same -- on true bypass the sound is the same as the initial strum in wet sound -- the guitar's baseline sound is unchanged, and the delays are where the sound is affected. The degrade knob is excellent, and the tone knob gives the ability to do very dark or bright echoes. The degrade in tape mode is excellent, but it does not give as much adjustment for wow and flutter as much as some of the top of the line (it is more than enough, but it won't give a major slow down or speed up of the delays, although it has a great warble). When switching modes (from analog, tape, lo fi, or reverse to another), the pedal defaults out of tap tempo mode to dial-tempo mode (and you have to hold the footswitch down for another 2 seconds to get it back to tap tempo); further, when going to tap tempo, it defaults to quarter note, and you have to adjust the dial to put it in 8th or dotted 8th - but none of these would be an issue live, and it's very intuitive. In addition, many of the other top delays are similar in settings, and also require tweaking if there's a change of setting, as well as substantial real estate. If I put the pedal in analog or tape, and put it in tap tempo mode, I could leave it there all night without bending down except for the occasional need to adjust the loudness of delays or change quarters v. dotted 8ths - that's GREAT functionality.

The only comparable delay in this price range with these features is the alter ego by TC, which is one of the best sounding small footprint delays on the market (yes, I've got one of those as well, and PGS, you guys made a monster of a pedal when you made that one with TC - it's amazing). Great device, pragmatic layout...  (By Paul)

Very useful and flexible delay. It's not really geared toward the uber-weird voicings (which is a good thing in this case) though you can milk some spacey stuff out of it. Super solid feeling pots. Tons of tweakability for the small footprint with the stacked pots. Exceptionally tough casing. Tone can be smeared as desired, though remains a good degree of clarity and articulation. The reverse function has a fair degree of inherent latency, though no more than most pedals attempting such processing. Highly recommend. Very well engineered and musical. (Posted on 6/4/15)

Digitech Obscura Altered Delay

The DigiTech Obscura makes no bones about the fact that it's a digital delay, and it also makes no bones about the fact that players can simply obliterate the signal every which way.

Despite its appearance, the Obscura actually contains five knobs, one mode selection switch, a tails switch and tap tempo capability. The four modes are Tape, Lo-Fi, Analog and Reverse, and the five knobs are the uniquitous Level knob, Time, Repeats, Tone and Degrade. â€‹Between these knobs, players have a bevy of options for tone sculpting.

The Tone knob helps to lighten or darken the repeats of any mode, which helps players cop some convincing Echoplex tones on one side and some murky Maxon AD-80 tones on the other. If that's not enough repeat coloration, the Degrade knob helps whittle away at the fidelity of the repeats, from a subtle grit to complete obliteration. In Lo-Fi mode, this makes a real difference, and in Tape mode, the repeats sound as if the tape is a true weathered attic find, where the tape is on the verge of crumbling off the takeup reel.

A dedicated Reverse mode makes the Obscura one of a handful of compact delays capable of this sound, and the Reverse algorithm is no slouch. It's the kind of audio engineering one would expect from the geniuses at Harman.

Can you believe that the Obscura also has tap tempo capabilities, with subdivisions? It's true—just hold the footswitch down for three seconds and turn the Time knob to set the subdivision of choice. To exit, simply hold the switch down once more. The Obscura also features true stereo ins and outs for creative signal routing, as well as a Tails switch to either keep the delayed signal going when the pedal if off, or kill it completely for bursts of delay!
