Deadly as all f***  (By Rob )

All about volume control with this one. I'm amazed at the variety of tones I can get between my two pickups and adjusting volume knobs accordingly. This is killer power amp distortion, and destroys a loud clean channel - with an overdrive in front of it, it seers. The only negative is it pumps the volume so much that if you want to use you really need to keep it on all the time because without it the channel drops volume in a huge way. (Posted on 4/1/16)

This pedal sounds excellent. Very responsive to your attack and subtle guitar adjustments. Simple to use, turn it on and it's pure fuzzy goodness, turn the knob to decide how loud you want it. If you can't figure this one out I don't know what to tell you.

EQD nailed it. For the money, you can't go wrong. (Posted on 3/30/16)
Respect and Fear the Knob  (By Kelly)

This pedal is pure mesmerizing tonal bliss. I've long been after this tone and the scathing goodness of a Sunn Model T.
Got in on the early batch before the mass produced new batch and I'm very thankful for the limited run paint job that no longer exists.
Simple design, crushing tone - unbeatable price!
Earthquaker killed it!
The Knob is to be respected and feared. It can crush entire cities... say goodbye to all of your neighbors faces as they prepare for melt off. (Posted on 3/11/16)
Serious tones  (By John)

Great pedal. One knob simplicity. Not just a fuzz but some great overdrive, clean-on-the-edge-of-breakup and distortion with almost endless sustain available when combining guitar volume and tone with different setting of that big knob.
I wouldn't be surprised, though if Earthquaker doesn't re-release this pedal with either an internal trim pot to set the gain level or a volume knob on the pedal itself. I mean, loud is good, but using the Gold on my amp's clean channel, matched volume-wise to my distortion channel results in almost no volume when I disengage the pedal. (Posted on 3/5/16)
Use dem volume controls  (By fartz)

Works just like a guitar into a cranked power amp! The different levels of dirt you can get out of adjusting the volume on your guitar is unreal. Much more versatile than messing with the volume on the pedal itself, but the volume this pedal creates can push your amp hard as fuck.

Plays well with other pedals too. I have it at the end of all of my dirt pedals and it takes all of them like a champ. Run it after a TS style pedal to add more punch or after a RAT (or in my case a Roadkill) for some serious Matt Pike tones. Shit's fucking rad. (Posted on 2/18/16)
THE LOUDEST MOST INTENSE AWESOME EVER  (By Space Wizard)

One pedal, one knob. Simple. Set your amp to its cleanest purest tone. You dont need alot of volume. This is your starting point. Turn the Acapulco Gold on with the knob at about 9 oclock. Feel the roasting goodness of what it feels like to own a Sunn Model T. You really cant tell the difference between the two if you have a good clean tube amp that its running into. It doesnt sound as good through an amp set with high gain already unless you just like total nastiness.

Now use the pedals one knob as your master volume for your amp. Thick flabby chords in the lower register for total destruction of tone. Sweet creamy solo notes in the upper register that will literally hide all of your sloppiness.

You cant go wrong with this pedal unless you want something quiet and subtle. This pedal does not do quiet or subtle.

For 117 bucks, you cannot go wrong. (Posted on 2/5/16)

I haven't had this much instant gratification in a long while. Just step on it and start jamming. They say it's not a fuzz but you can do alot with it in either fuzz or distortion territory. Also got some old school '70s rock just by backing off my guitar's volume. This one is staying on my board! (Posted on 1/11/16)
It's a Fuzz.  (By Jimmy)

First off, guys Rockin' Van Halen style aren't going to be using this but true to power amp reaction you need a little bit of room to get this really crankin' it's LOUD. Really clipped power tube distortion is a lot closer to the sound of fuzz than you think if you are used to master volume style preamp distortion hence it sounds like fuzz but you can avoid the stranger artefacts of some fuzz tones
*Kick it behind some light overdrive and you've got Muff style sustain.
*To a clean amp it's old school, the more you crank the more you get. (Posted on 1/2/16)
An in-your-face, no non-sense dirt pedal!  (By Mike John)

This is one heck of a power-amp distortion pedal!!! its a beast and is loud! u get both distortion/fuzz magic going on on this one!
this pedal works best on a super clean amp/channel. im using a Fender Twin and boy does this drive my twin a huge sucker punch of a drive! i tried this with my JCM800 but it sounds rather dry and muffled. this beast is very good on both single coils and humbucker. it gives my Strat that nasty roar and with my SG it gives it one nasty growl! my fave settings is somewhere between 9:30-10:30 position. this pedal is very sensitive to ur vol knob as well which comes in handy for those mellow riffs in between. Earthquaker Devices has made one hell of a gem on this pedal! so if ur looking for an in-your-face, no non-sense dirt pedal, this is IT! (Posted on 1/1/16)

I am not familiar with the Sunn T so I can't compare. But truly this pedal has made me realize the limitations that my blues driver or screamer has. I can go to a very nice dirty clean to a knock down the walls dirty. I'm downright scared to crank this pedal to the max, I like my hearing and not sure my Blues Jr. amp can handle this pedal. About 1/3 open my volume knob on my guitar is amazing. (Posted on 12/31/15)

I never heard of a Sunn Model T so I can't compare. I am getting familiar with the Acapulco Gold range and versatility especially using my guitar volume and tone knobs. I love my tube screamer and blues driver and I have found the Acapulco can deliver a screamer or driver vibe on lower setting, but turn the Acapulco Gold's one knob up halfway............I had to stop playing to catch my breath. wowzers, put the screamer to bed. This is definitely no one trick pony. The controls are on your guitar! I was amazed at how much the character of this pedal changed when adjusting the guitar's volume and/or tone knob just a bit. With the volume rolled back just a bit, the pedal delivers a warm, meaty distortion. Dropped a bit more, it becomes a nice, musical overdrive. Of course, when opened up all the way, the sound becomes very aggressive and crosses the line into fuzz territory. This is actually a surprisingly versatile pedal despite its simple looks. Give it a try! (Posted on 12/25/15)

I was looking for a different dirty sound compared to a typical fuzz or distortion box...something sort of in between and this sounded like could fit the bill. I've owned several EQD pedals (Hoof, Speaker Cranker, White Light, Hummingbird) and this one is my favorite out of them all of them. Since it's not a true fuzz it's a lot tighter sounding on rhythms compared to the hoof. The volume warning should not be taken lightly... be careful about maxing it out on smaller amps, this thing gets insanely loud. (Posted on 12/7/15)

EQD include a warning about how loud the pedal is. That warning is justified, but I found it sounds awesome with the guitar turned up and the pedal output turned pretty low. Then I got some great distortion even at a low volume. I really appreciate the simple, sturdy design, the quality construction, and the new dimension this pedal adds to my playing. This my first boutique pedal and I think I made the right choice. I'm looking forward to trying more EQD stuff! (Posted on 11/12/15)

Ill start out by saying Im a bassist. So that is what Ive been using my Acapulco Gold with, bass. And I have to say, I really dig it. I thought it would be more of an OD or even dist when I got it. Boy was mistaken. For me, this pedal is a fuzz through and through. Now I know that guitarists can back off their volume and use it as an OD, then crank it for fuzz. But I keep my output on my bass dimed at all times. So its a fuzz for me. I did notice however that I could back the bass's output off a little and I wouldnt lose that much output. Its like the pedal keeps your instruments output level pretty solid no matter if you turn it up or down, its the dirts character that changes.

Its very reminiscent of my Dizzy Tone by Jext Telez. Very brutal, aggressive and mean. It retains the low end extremely well and it does cut quiet well in the mix too. If I want to melt some faces with some serious bass fuzz, this is a great pedal to do it with. I would recommend this pedal to anyone looking for an aggressive, simple and affordable dist/fuzz. For bassists or guitarists. Thats a A in my book.

So many reviews here in so little time reflects the justified enthusiasm for this pedal. Andy's demo won me over (Uncle Acid? Yes, please!!!) and I was so happy with this wee monster when I plugged it in and got to making my own kind of noise with it. Just a powerful little box that delivers an angry, beefy, wildly-powerful distortion that sounds pretty close to the Sunn Model T to me. Minor quibble is that notes high up the register can fizzle out, but if your fretting technique is solid, you're golden. I put the Empress Para EQ before this, and got the high-note sustain I was looking for. If you love grunt and punch in your signal, this pedal is a no-brainer. (Posted on 10/13/15)

Huge sound! Not quite overdrive and not quite fuzz. Sounds a bit raspy and buzzy at lower settings, but then something magic happens as you begin to push the amp a bit. I can get similar sounds with other IC based fuzzes like the EWS Fuzzy Drive and the Henretta Choad Blaster, but the Acapulco Gold just does it a bit better and heavier. The price is just ok since there's not really a ton going on in the box. (Posted on 10/8/15)

Unleash this beast on your amp and find tonal nirvana in the fuzz/distortion realm. I ran it into my little practice amp(little moe' I think, it's built into a guitar strap) anywhoo, damn!!! It cranked! Then into the Budda SD 18, wheeeeeee!!! Do it. Using strats these days, w/ vintage noiseless and Mayer Big Dipper p/u's, the Big Dippers just shine with any fuzz and distortion. Suprisingly useful and toneful pedal. Well voiced and not in need of tone contols at all. I bought this after seeing the video. It is excellent for low end riffage and is focused enough for nuanced lead work. Somehow it manages to have a lot of "weight" to it without flubbiness. I will be keeping this pedal. This is my new favourite pedal. I was a little worried at first because it only has one knob (that's what she said) but it's tuned perfectly and puts my other drives to shame. It just makes me want to play. It's my first Earthquaker pedal and I'm sure it won't be my last. Plus the price is right. If you're on the fence, just get it! You'll be sorry when they're gone. As a bonus I also discovered my new favourite band - Red Fang. (Posted on 10/2/15)

Simple no nonsense pedal. One knob so you cant mess up plug it in turn it on and get great tones! I use a Super Fuzz clone in front of this and together they make such a good combo! My favorite part is how it cleans up with your guitars output volume, this thing does anything from bright chime-y pushed cleans, crunchy over drive, or searing leads just by going up and down in volume! Gear: fender deluxe reverb, fender jazzmaster, and gibson les paul classic(2014).

Don't get me wrong, this pedal can get you a great doom tone. Tuned down to c# on my les paul, it is a beast.

However tuned to standard pitch on my jazzmaster, i was able to get a wonderfully rich tone similar to Smashing Pumpkins Gish record, and my bloody valentine when on the neck pickup.

Rolling off the volume knob of your guitar cleans up very well. If you like what you hear on Andy's demo, i'd suggest picking this up.

I must say, I didn't quite know what to expect when i ordered this pedal. I had always desired that classic cranked model T sound, and let me tell ya.. It does not disappoint! This thing can get massive! and yet with the roll of your volume knob, clean right up without losing all your volume. This is my third Earthquaker pedal and as always they never fail to impress. Paired with the Hoof Fuzz you can get really nasty. Also sounds really good with the octave up activated on my Hoof/Reaper/Octave fuzz. To conclude if you are thinking about it, all i can say is GET IT WHILE YOU CAN. IT. IS. BEAST. (Posted on 9/29/15)

EarthQuaker Devices Acapulco Gold

*Please note graphic change. The black pedal with the gold cowboy graphic is the current finish available. See images.

You know what's awesome? Simplicity. One button, one knob. How loud would you like it? Just move the knob. The Acapulco Gold is an original power-amp distortion circuit from our friends at EarthQuaker Devices that's based on a dimed Sunn Model T. This is the spirit of rock and roll. Quit turning knobs and play that guitar like you mean it.

With a dirt sound this good, any one second spent bending down and fiddling with knobs is one second too much. This is why the Acapulco Gold has one gigantic knob; move the thing and it gets louder or quieter.

While playing, don't forget to fiddle with your guitar's volume and tone knobs, these can drastically affect the sound of the Acapulco Gold. The volume knob, especially, cleans the pedal up pretty well; not completely, this ain't your daddy's Fuzz Face. At minimum guitar-volume settings, the Gold imparts a hazy Nashville-sounding spank to your tone. At just-barely-backed-off, the Gold turns into a raunchy overdrive.

Of course, when the guitar's knob is fully on, the Gold roars like a Model T on the verge of explosion. It's not-quite-fuzz, but so close.

Like all EarthQuaker Devices pedals, the Acapulco Gold is hand-built by real people using premium components in Akron, Ohio, where the beer flows like wine.

EarthQuaker Devices Acapulco Gold Features:

  • Based on a cranked Sunn Model T
  • One-knob operation—use your guitar's volume knob as a saturation control
  • True bypass switching
  • Standard 9v center-negative operation
