Electro Harmonix Synth 9 Synthesizer Machine

The concept of cramming classic synth tones into a pedal is as old as the synth itself. Pedals were already in full swing by the time synthesizers hit the consumer market, and since then, guitarists have been scowling at synth players with green, envious eyes. Maestro released a synth pedal in the early ‘70s, and other companies have been trying their hands at it since. At some point, pedal companies figured out that the only way to sate thirsty guitarists was to invent a pickup system. With that said, the synth pedal market is dry.

Leave it to Electro-Harmonix to adapt its popular “9 Series” to the land of synthesizers. There’s no special pickups needed, just bring your axe and your amp and you’ll soon punch your ticket to the exclusive synthesis club. This is the Synth9.

Like the other “9 Series” pedals, the Synth9 gives you nine patches, all with unique controls, and all corresponding to classic synthesizers. In true EHX fashion, the company left no synth stone unturned in giving you every classic synth sound you can think of, along with some you’d wish you had known about earlier.

Here’s the mode rundown and what the Control knobs do in each:

1. OBX

This mode gives you classic Oberheim sounds, as featured on Van Halen’s “Jump,” among many, many others. In this mode, CTRL 1 functions as a tone control, while CTRL selects an octave, of which there are five.

2. Profit V

As you might guess, this mode puts you behind the ivories of a Sequential Circuits Prophet V, one of the most iconic synths ever produced. CTRL 1 messes with the envelope control by adjusting the sweep of the decay, while CTRL2 adjusts the range.

 3. Vibe Synth

This mode is an EHX original, giving you a polyphonic analog synth with a decaying vibrato flutter, like ramping up on the mod wheel on the back end of the filter. CTRL 1 changes the harmonic content, while CTRL 2 controls the intensity and rate of the vibrato sound.

4. Mini Mood

The Synth9 would be remiss if it didn’t include the MiniMoog, one of the most celebrated synthesizers the world has ever known. The MiniMoog is renowned for its rich leads and EHX’s take introduces a portamento (note glide) feature that can be dialed in with CTRL 1. CTRL 2 sets the time for the portamento, giving you the ability to pull off slick lead lines.

5. EHX Mini

This mode gives you a taste of Electro-Harmonix’s own rare Mini Synthesizer, a powerful analog brute with a membrane panel instead of keys. With this aggressive synth engine, CTRL 1 plays with the filter by allowing different adjustments dependent on the knob being left- or right-of-center, while CTRL 2 adjusts the octave range.

6. Solo Synth

In this mode, an analog synth patch is interwoven with a square-wave fuzz circuit, for a powerful lead sound that will breathe life into any dull solo. In this mode, CTRL 1 functions as a tone control, while CTRL 2 controls a four-octave range.

7. Mood Bass

This patch is based off the impossibly heavy Moog Taurus pedals made famous by Rush, among others. This powerful synth sound will shake any speaker you have, for some extremely fat rhythm playing. CTRL 1 alters the downward filter sweep while CTRL 2 selects a three-octave range.

8. String Synth

Based on an ARP Solina, the String Synth patch gives you full and rich string emulation and pad sounds unequaled by any other pedal on the market. In this mode, CTRL 1 functions as a tone control, while CTRL 2 governs the attack time, for some very synthy swell effects.

9. Poly VI

The sleeper hit of the pedal, the Poly VI is based on the equally underrated Korg Polysix. This vintage oddball is known for its dense polyphonic tones and onboard modulation. CTRL 1 functions as a tone control, while CTRL 2 controls the rate of the Polysix’s onboard modulation.

In order to wring the most from your synth experience, the Synth9 gives you a duo of mix controls, one for dry volume and one for synth volume. This allows you to mix and match your clean and effected tones for just the right amount of synthesis. The handy dry out lets you run the Synth9 as a pass-through, so you can send the synth tone to its own amp or other effects for some truly fat synth accompaniment. The sky is the limit.

Electro Harmonix Synth 9 Features:

  • Nine fully-realized synth engines with individual controls for each
  • Global dual-band mix circuit gives you precise control over your tone
  • Dry out lets you send the synth tones to a different amp or mixer
  • Standard 9v center-negative power operation (adapter included)
