On and on ... and on etc  (By Alan Day)

I bought mine 4 years ago and it's still great. I bought it for the "Tape" setting only to discover the Strymon El Capistan only two days later! Even so, I have never really wanted more from the "Tape" settings of the EVMSD and the 8 presets seals it as the better unit anyway.
Easy to call up that "Brick in the Wall" triplet echo. Love the "Hi pass" switch. Great features. Only downer is that Empress never returned my email (they have had 4 years so far) when I asked about the seemingly non functional "Misc" mode features relating to Feedback and Mix. (Posted on 11/2/14)

I am a professional guitarist (40+ years) with very high standards for sound quality. Before purchasing the Empress I compared it for several hours to other top rated delays. To me, the Empress was the clear winner. Excellent "tone" - did not color my guitar tone - just enhanced the natural tone with top shelf effects that are extremely tweakable and programmable. With eight presets for easy live performance access, small footprint, ease of use, durability and great looks, this unit is worth the price tag. If lost/stolen, I would purchase another immediately. Best natural sounding delay  (By Cylon99)

I got tired of the trusty ole Boss DD20 and DD5. Boss was killing my tone and the delay was a bit weak. Great for a beginner until you go on a tone sucking search. I wanted a good delay that didn't kill my sound, capable of analog, tape, reverse delays, tap tempo and ability to switch from quarter notes, to eighth notes, to dotted eighths on the fly. I play leads, power chords, lot of ambient/synth/pad swells, chicken pickin banjo-ish dotted eighth runs (think Edge but more muted) and needed a versatile pedal.

I checked out Strymon's Timeline but wasn't interested in reading a digital display and programming. I just wanted something simple with knobs and switches. Empress is right up there with Strymon in terms of tone and flexibility.

I love the Empress Vintage Modified Superdelay. It does everything I want from a pedal and more. The tricky part for me was learning that the tap tempo takes the average number of taps. Boss takes the last couple taps. That took some getting used to, but now I realize how much more accurate the Empress pedal is for me.

The Empress tone is one of the most natural delay tones I have ever heard. I love the modulate switch and the LP and HP switch. This pedal is extremely versatile. This delay also has an "auto" switch. You can play a series of notes, hit that "tap" switch and the Delay pedal will auto match your rhythm. There another mode for matching your syncopated beats too.. it's a multi-rhythm mode. Super awesome! Tape Delay is freaking AMAZING, especially for ambient swells.

Buyer beware that this pedal takes a positive tip power. If you want to add it to your line up, know that this is 300mA of power consumption and you'll need a positive tip connector (most voodoo labs, decibel 11, etc... comes with the red tipped adapter). Other than that small thing, this pedal is perfect!

Oh and the pictures make this pedal look huge. Empress actually takes a much smaller footprint on my board than the DD20. It's a little thicker, but the actual length/width of the pedal is about 1/3 smaller than the DD20 in size. The nice part is that the 3 switches are much taller than the average pedal. The Empress is at the top of my pedalboard and I don't fear knocking into my pedal (below) because the switches are so high. Thanks Empress for thinking that one through! (Posted on 3/18/14)

This pedal is simply outstanding. It adds that vintage sound dynamic that will make you sound like a pro. Very solid and very tweakable. I had to set mine up on my and play with it for weeks to fully appreciate what it can do. It's a bit pricy but worth it if you want authentic, analog delay sound with all the depth and color that this pedal can give you. Tones overtones and echoey backspace repeats that fill the sonic space like sunlight. Love it. (Posted on 3/4/14)

I have been using this for 2 years now and there a few great things about it. 1st, you get 8 presets to call up. AWESOME! 2nd, if you get tired of the settings like most of us do with a lot of pedals, you start from scratch and make new delays and realize just how amazing this thing is. Only down side is........ ok that's about it. Get one! (Posted on 7/8/13)

Empress Vintage Modified Superdelay

This ain't yo mama's Superdelay, no sireee! The Empress Vintage Modified Superdelay is the result of a collaboration between Empress and us here at PGS to bring you an incredible delay pedal. The Vintage Modified Superdelay is finished in stunning black with gold script writing and labeling just to make your friends jealous. That's not the only change though. We've had the Tape mode refined to give a more vintage feel to the repeats. When you're in Tape mode there are 3 different types; Basic, Vintage, and Old. We left the Basic mode alone but had Empress modify the Vintage and Old modes. In the Vintage Mode (remember, these are all under the Tape setting) we've added extra modulation for a rich, full sounding repeat with full frequency response. In the Old Mode we've kept the same modulation but rolled off the high end by 15% and added some grit to emulate a tape delay with worn heads, old tape, and a bit of flutter. Both these new settings sound true to the tape delay legacy and give the Empress Vintage Modified Superdelay more versatility than before. There are no other mods to the original Superdelay circuit.

Empress Vintage Modified Superdelay

The Empress Vintage Modified Superdelay is one step closer to perfection. Besides the already beautiful delays that are available from this awesome pedal, the new modifications will tease and please the ears of all tape delay fans. The Vintage setting now has some added modulation that makes the repeats lush and full with a bit of warble ala Gilmour. The Old mode has had the high end rolled off a bit with the same modulation and some grit added to produce worn heads and dirty tape on your tape delay. The effect is startling, warm fuzzy repeats with enough modulation to give the impression of tape flutter from an old poorly maintained machine. The new Empress Vintage Modified Superdelay still has all the rest of the features and great sounding delays as the original with a new paint job and a little added appeal to the tape and vintage delay fans.

Empress Vintage Modified Superdelay Features:

  • Old setting has Highs Rolled Off 15% and Added Grit
  • Tap Tempo
