Glad I pulled the trigger on this!  (By Dannymac1216)

I had my eye on this amp for a while. I was looking for something to replace my Vox Valvetronix amp. I wanted that nice tube sound, something I could do small gigs with eventually but I could still play at home relatively quietly. I originally wanted a Fender Blues Deluxe, but I don't need 40 watts. I eventually figured a Blues Junior would be a great choice. But which one?! There are so many different options out there. I did a youtube search one day for "fender blues junior" just to see what different ones sound like, and the Humboldt Hot Rod popped up. I'd never heard of it, but I checked it out. I watched maybe 3 videos, and that was it. Had to have it! I've only had it for a few days now, I've had the chance to play it a few times with my buddies. It's everything I've wanted. Amazing tonal range, beautiful tone, the highs aren't shrieky and shrill, and it has plenty of headroom. Sounds equally great with my Telecaster as it does with my Les Paul. It looks awesome too! And, I got it for 15% off, so it was basically a steal! (Posted on 12/17/13)
Classic Fender tone without vintage price  (By mjp)

Maybe I'm biased (or just really old) but the mid and lower level Fender amps of the past 20+ years have sounded less like Fenders and more like -- well, everything else. Which is to say, kind of typical and a little bit crappy. This little guy is 100% Fender tone and 0% bullshit.

Nice clean sound, which I was after, but when you put an overdrive in front of it (like, say a B.K. Butler Tube Driver), it becomes an unruly little monster. In other words; perfect. And it can get very loud for a 15 watt amp, as anyone within a block of my house can attest. The old school aesthetics are just an added bonus.

I will say that when I first plugged my Les Paul Special into it (single coil P90s) it buzzed like a 60 cycle bee hive. So I put an Electro-Harmonix Hum Debugger in front of it and the bees flew off to find a new queen.

Quiet, beautiful, classic tone - you really couldn't ask for more from an amp at this price point. (Posted on 12/13/13)

I'm not a fan of the cosmetics, especially compared to the previous versions. I think v.1 was wine tolex/wheat grill cloth, and I LOVED v.2 with the GREEN tolex. Come on, it's called a HUMBOLDT Hot Rod. If you're gonna go with the whole Cannabis Rex/"mary Jane" theme, I think you should go keep the green. I commend the concept of the amp and the features and all the demos sound great, but the cosmetics are pretty bland on this versoion IMO. Salt and pepper grill cloth, that's a Marshall thing, isn't it? (Posted on 12/4/13)

I have always been a Marshall guy with 4x12's. Had a lot of them and have kept my Vintage Modern for a while now. I don't play out a lot and have knee issues so I have been scaling down to lighter amps. I've purchased some others and although they are OK, I kept looking for more. I saw this and the speaker and the unique manufacture of this, I thought what the heck, maybe it would be collectable some day. I got it home and played and it made "the Fender" clean sound well. Which is great but I am a rocker. You can overdrive it pretty well but being a single channel amp (sans remote control of the fat switch). So I brought out some pedals I had. I have never had really great results with pedals. I've been more into the cord into the amp type. I had a Marshall Jackhammer laying around and plugged it in. WHAM! Holy crap! This amp responds so GREAT to gain pedals. My VOX JS Satchurator is awesome as well. I know lots of guys play pedals and other than chorus and echos in the fx loop and wah's I never got it. I do now! This amp is a KEEPER!

I finally got to spend some quality time with the humbolt today. I have to say it's truly luscious with humbuckers. I had a bit of trouble dialing in my strat... then I remembered I'd punched the fat button. Much better now. Still a bit tweaky on the high end, almost sibilant instead of chimey. I'll have to spend some more time with it to dial in the clean tones I want. I had wanted something louder than my little Blackstar HT5 which wasn't filling the "grab and go" role, but something south of my Reverend head and 2x12 in size and volume. This fits the bill nicely. I thought it looked pretty from the photo's on line. When I took it out of its box I was pleased that it weight less then any other of the gaggle of amps I own. Then I took her dressings off. Vava Voom! She is quite the looker. The Nubex is surprisingly gorgeous. Touching it was a pleasure. Then my eyes moved toward the Salt and Pepper grill cloth... Holy Moly! it just looks dynamite.

It was late at night and I had just re-carpeted my studio's floor so I was whooped. I plugged my CIJ Tele up to her thinking to myself "this is only going to happen for a minute or two, I need to sleep." BlaAaAAAnnG! ChHaaAAng! Blam!!... Jeezus!!! WOW!!! I stayed up for another 2 hours.

They say it takes a few to break in the speaker. If thats true I can't wait to reach it's sweet spot. So far I am happy all around. I have the distinct feeling this Hempter Junior III will be with me all the way to the grave. (Posted on 7/20/13)

I was honestly surprised by this amp. I knew the old HHR sounded good but was too dark, and I needed something that covered a lot of territory in the studio where my Pro Junior wasn't cutting it. I love my PJ but it does it's thing and only that. I've been playing with this HHR for a few weeks now and am really amazed at the wide range of useful tones you can get out of this thing. It doesn't sound as great as a Deluxe Reverb or anything, but covers most of that ground from clean to driven, springy, etc. The fat switch is subtler than I expected but if you push an overdrive into it it makes a big difference in the response. I bought this little guy on a whim figuring I could always sell it when they run out, being a limited edition and all, but now I don't know if I'll ever part with it. It just has the smoothest sound for a little Blues Junior and some really useful tone controls. I did not have that experience at all using a stock BJ. I even took it to a gig, but as I play bass in my band, I brought it for the keyboardist and ran it out to a cabinet. I set the EQ mostly flat and clean and it was a HUGE tonal upgrade for him, he had been running through one of those Vox Valvetronics. Anyway, this little baby is super versatile and easily competes with any amp I've tried in the price range. And it looks pretty hawt too. (Posted on 7/17/13)

I was so bummed when I missed out on the last issue of the HHR. I got the new one about 45 minutes ago and it's great! Love the tone and I haven't even messed with the tone settings yet (set 'em all at 6 1/2 to start off with). Volume at 8 and the master at 3 and this thing is WayLoud in a small room. Hard to believe it's only 15 watts. Great reverb too. I've only tried it with my 3 Mini-Bucker Strat so far, so I gotta leave off here and go try the SG and Jags... (Posted on 7/11/13)

PGS and Fender did it right! This little amp will fool you the minute you turn it on. Boutique sound on a beer budget! I've been playing for nearly 50 years and own many cool amps. My 2000 Blues Jr. has been my go to amp for many a gig, but it always lacked a little something. The Humboldt now takes up the slack. From the minute I fired it up the tone just blew me away! Love the sparkle mod and the hemp come speaker really sweetens the sound, no matter how you dial it in. Catch it on sale ($479.) and for under $500 it will be the best tone investment you can make. Single coils and humbuckers both sound great. A great sounding amp priced right that I plan on enjoying for a long time! (Posted on 7/10/13)

Just finished jamming through it a bit and my first impression.... Sounds Freaking Great! Much better than my tweed version. Great clean tones. Great fizzy overdrive tones too when bass turned up and over-driven Master volume. I never liked or used the Fat switch on any amp. Sounds great with my Philosophers tone, Fulltone OCD, HBE PowerScreamer, Wish it had a Line Out jack. Probably get one put in. Anyway, Love the sound of that speaker, whatever it is. Very warm and broken in! Great Job! It's a Keeper for sure. I will be putting my tweed one on EBAY! (Posted on 7/9/13)

I own the previous version with the bloodshot red tolex, wheat grille cloth, and cannabis rex speaker and have had it for about 6 months now and all I can say is I have been blown away by this amp..
It handles all my pedals flawlessly (even something as demanding as a analogman sunface BC109). It gets exceptionally loud and at this stage handles all my needs as a budding guitarist. It gives you plenty headroom, and when you do crank the tubes you get a great creamy tube overdrive perfect to put your pedals through and build your sound (which btw can get really loud for a 15W). Best of all is the price, I really did my homework before buying this amp and purchasing this amp from proguitarshop, shipping it all the way to South Africa, and customs duty it has still saved me atleast 200-300 dollars than if I bought a "custom/limited edition" blues junior here in South Africa. Thats what I call value! An outstanding amp! Well done PGS! P.S. If you only own solid state amps its time to come to the other side and this is the amp to start, it will blow your other amps out of the water! (Posted on 7/3/13)

and get one now if you like things simple, affordable, practical and ever bought something expensive and felt like you got ripped off. This amp makes up for it. This little beast sounds great, period. Loud, low volume, clean, overdriven, you name it. The sweetness of El84's and the tweaked speaker have never made dirt and fuzzes sound this good! The base tone is great and stacks so well. For most people this little amp will be more than youll ever need. My favorite grab and go amp. Have had mine for a week and want to get another cuz its that good. (Posted on 6/28/13)

I'll admit, I've avoided most new amps from Fender. The Hot Rod series seems like it always falls short. When I saw the PGS video and learned of the addition of an updated Emi Cann-Rex, I was def interested. The amp looks/sounds so much better. I already own a Cann Rex in my 2x12, and it's just a great all around speaker. It's the perfect upgrade for the Reissue Deluxe Reverb, and I took a chance a few years back and paired it with the Emi Red Fang with killer results. I love the HHR, and no matter what guitar or pedal, it really covers alot of ground. I also plugged straight in with my 335, and P-90 equipped hardtail Jazzmaster, and it really delivers. This will be great for recording, and any situation that requires less volume. The HHR is also great using a 2x12, or 4x12 and for two-amp setups, this would be perfect to use in tandem. Kudos to PGS for the much needed upgrades. It's a winner!! (Posted on 6/27/13)
Tonal Bliss  (By Donald)

Just got my Humboldt Hot Rod today. It is awesome. The overdriven sound is pure tonal bliss. I can say without a doubt this is the absolute easiest amp from which to get a great sound . My LP style guitar with Duncan Alnico Pro II pickups sounds great and maintains clarity even in the neck position with the bass on 12 and the mid and treble on 6. I also think it's great that my amp goes one more than Nigel Tufnel's Marshall's. Thanks for the great amp.

Fantastic Classic Tone  (By Lee)

I just received my Humboldt Hot Rod V 2 today and spent 2 hours constantly playing. Both my Les Paul and Franken-strat sound fantastic.

This amp provides some seriously sweet classic tones. Takes pedals well (my pedal board has 12 pedals--all of which sound great). It can be turned down fairly low to say 2 on the Master and 3 on the Preamp--at that volume it is pretty good for apartment/house practice, but it would be too loud for any nighttime jams, unless you have very understanding spouses/neighbors.

Overall I am very pleased with my purchase. And of course everything shipped by PGS is first class. (Posted on 6/24/13)
I like my Fender Blues Junior, but...  (By Mooncritters)

It has the best tone, when it works. Maybe mine is due for some tubes, but I have strange, intermittent problems where it stops working, or drops in volume unexpectedly, or cackles with sudden static and noise.

Otherwise, it is the "right" amp. It is just loud enough, so long as the drummer can keep his volume under control. I put my guitar on my back, pedalboard in suitcase in one hand, and walk down the street with the amp in the other hand.

The sound is right on. Turn it down, it sings clean, and it plays nice with pedals. Turn it up, and it barks, right at the classic blues and rock and roll sweet spot. I have other amps, and pedals, and digital multi-effects, and still my ears prefer these tubes. It does not offer any high-gain tones.

I think I need to get mine fixed. If I buy another amp, I may need to spend a pile of dough to get something that sounds as good as this, but is more reliable. (Posted on 6/20/13)

I have the beautiful Emerald Green version and I like it so much I want to buy another. I don't know why I need another amp, I have many, including several small ones. And the cannabis rex speaker is a major improvement to be sure. Some of the small amps out there have good overdrive but not clean. Few have brilliant clear cleans and overdrive. Now the Humboldt may not have enough overdrive for some, and I almost always take an overdrive pedal, it's better to build your sound from a good clean amp then it is to get an amp with lots of overdrive and hope for a good clean sound. Also it may be one of the loudest 15 watts out there. The two things I would change is to give it enough overdrive on tap so you didn't need a pedal and make the reverb come on much more gradual, passed 2 or 3 it's way too much. (Posted on 6/19/13)
Love My Humboldt  (By William)

I just picked up my new Humboldt Hot Rod this afternoon and I am very pleased. It's a great sounding amp, warm with tweedy. The Cannabis Rex (in this case a slightly tweaked version) is the perfect speaker for the Blues Junior as everybody knows. They make a huge difference in the tone quality.

At about 30 pounds, the amp is light enough to just grab and go, and the volume will hold up just fine with a band in small venues.

Aesthetically, this is the coolest Blues Junior version---for my taste, anyway. The Nubtex cabinet and salt & pepper grill cloth are very classy and give the amp a real boutique vibe.

You could pay two or three times as much for a boutique small amp, but why? If you can catch this one on sale (PGS offers frequent promotional offers---sign up for their emails), its even more of a bargain. I bought mine on Father's Day.

Couldn't be happier. Thanks PGS! (Posted on 6/18/13)

Fender Humboldt Hot Rod

After the overwhelming success of the Humboldt Hot Rod, we went back to the drawing board with Fender to make the Humboldt even hotter. The Humboldt now features a 12” Eminence Hot Rod Hempster speaker, a customized version of the Cannabis Rex speaker used in previous editions of the HHR. The Hempster speaker is voiced specifically for this amp and has a unique response—providing the smoky tone, tight low end and refined upper midrange that it has been famous for while ensuring a wider frequency range that lets the speaker open up a bit more. A trio of 12AX7 preamp tubes and a pair of EL84 power tubes deliver classic Fender clean tones while the Fat switch boosts the preamp gain for a bit of naturally overdriven distortion. The classic Fender chime is even sweeter than before with no harsh edges and, using an efficient speaker, a bit more volume as well.

In addition to being the first and only amp using the Hot Rod Hempster speaker, the Humboldt Hot Rod sports several aesthetic firsts for a Fender amp: though it might be mistaken for classic black tolex, the HHR is actually covered in black Nubtex, a nod to classic British amps from the 60s and 70s; the grille cloth is inspired by vintage salt & pepper grille cloth of the same era; and last but not least—for the first time, the Humboldt Hot Rod sports a custom red rear badge with matching red front logo badge, signifying the Humboldt Hot Rod as an official entry into the Fender product line.

The Fender Humboldt Hot Rod is a workhorse amplifier with a rich tone and aesthetic that will satisfy even the most discerning guitarists. This one-of-a-kind amp is available for a limited time, only from Pro Guitar Shop.
