Fulltone

Fulltone Effects has been around since 1991, born of session guitarist and electronic tinkerer Mike Fuller's love of vintage gear, as well as his accompanying frustration with the inherent inconsistencies and unreliability of 30-year old pedals. Fulltone pedals have all the tonal qualities guitar players have come to love about vintage units, but are constructed with ultra-consistent modern components and build techniques. It's all about having reliable, great sounding "Tone Tools".

With this in mind, all Fulltone pedals are built by hand, by musicians, in their shop in southern California. They are built using the finest components available with no compromises or shortcuts. In fact, Fulltone even manufactures their own heavy duty Fulltone 3PDT True Bypass switches and custom-made potentiometers. This came about due to the up-to 20 percent failure rate that was common in the industry standard pots and switches of several years ago. They even have their own 22 gauge copper wire custom made to increase it's resistance to breakage, thereby maximizing pedal longevity.

Fulltone is particularly known for their overdrive pedals, a couple of which are considered among the greatest of all time according to Guitar Player Magazine's 2005 article "50 of The Greatest Stompboxes". Chief among these overdrive boxes is the Fulltone Fulldrive 2, which also won the Guitar Player 2007 Reader's Poll in the "Best Stompbox" category. This ingenius dual channel pedal has a clean boost / overdrive channel with a separate boost section for kicking things up a notch, allowing you to have a fat rhythm sound and a smokin' lead tone all in one pedal. Fulltone was the first company to include this feature in a guitar pedal. In addition, the new 2007 MOSFET version of the FD2 features a "Vintage" or "FM" mode selector switch, giving you a midrangey classic distortion tone in "Vintage" mode, or the "Flat-Mid" sound (for a more balanced frequency reponse) in "FM" mode. This pedal also features a very effective Tone knob for increasing presence, a "MOSFET" or "Standard" clipping switch, and a "CompCut" switch for decreasing compression. It's truly a mouthwatering feast of tasty overdrive tones. The overall tone is one of extremely rich, harmonically complex, sparkling overdrive and distortion sounds. It works beautifully with any decent tube amp. You just might never want to turn the Fulltone Full-Drive 2 off.

One of the newer entries in the overdrive / distortion pedal lineup is the Fulltone OCD. This compact, straightforward pedal is surely destined for greatness much as it's older brother has achieved. The OCD produces higher gain than the Fulldrive 2, and features a only basic tone control knob and a "Hi-Peak" or "Low-Peak" switch affecting the overall color of the sound. This pedal can really work magic on a great tube amp, pushing it into a meaty, sparkling overdrive that positively blooms into a bouquet of rich, even-order harmonics. A common first reaction upon plugging the OCD is simply "WHOA...". Upon further inspection you'll find that it's actually a very transparent pedal as well, and that it really preserves the character of a great guitar. The OCD also happens to clean up beautifully with a roll-back of your guitar's volume. The full frequency spectrum is still there, but now you have a spanking clean tone, with no more than a twist of the volume knob. The OCD is positively addictive.

Mike Fuller's newest overdrive creation is the recently released Fulltone GT-500 Boost / Distortion pedal. This bad boy continues the Fulltone tradition of 2-channel overdrive pedals, with a booster / overdrive section and a separate high-gain distortion section. There is even a Series Select Switch to choose which section comes first in the signal chain! The High Gain side of the Fulltone GT-500 is constructed with an inductor-driven mid circuit, much like in a wah-pedal, that allows for incredibly full-frequencied control of the entire mid-range band. The translation for the common guitar-slinger is as follows: The GT 500 has an enormous set of cajones. This is the ballsiest distortion pedal in production today. No tame sounds to be had here. And with a variety of complex, highly interactive tone-shaping controls this pedal is truly a blank canvas for overdrive sculpting fanatics. Unsurprisingly, this pedal also received the Guitar Player "Editor's Pick" award.
