Malekko - The Birth of Bad SoundAbout 3 years ago synth geeks Josh Holley and Dwayne Dassing wanted to form a band. Paul Barker (Ministry) was recruited for bass and a rehearsal space was secured. Upon the first practice, Paul pulled out his Maestro Brassmaster and immediately turned heads. The fruity looking pedal turned out to be his secret weapon when he played with Ministry. The band Malekko only lasted a year, but it turned out to be the catalyst for Malekko Heavy Industry.Josh wanted to name the band Malekko from Mark Chapman, the guy who killed Lennon. Mark had told his wife that he had to go to New York to write a book called Malekko the Gecko. Josh phoned up Paul the next day and asked him about the name Malekko. Mal in Latin is bad, and echo is a sound. Bad Sound. Thus the name Malekko was adopted for the band and would later become Malekko Heavy Industry. ![]() Malekko Analog ChorusThe Malekko Analog Chorus is the latest in the Omicron series of effects. Paul asked if Josh’s engineer father could clone his Brassmaster. A few months later the Barker Assmaster was born. The local demand in the Austin area for this pedal sparked the beginning of Malekko Heavy Industry. After spending 15 years in the tattoo industry, Josh Holley and his father started expanding the Malekko line of pedals. The Barker Assmaster was so popular that another version was made using germanium components instead of silicon. This is the Barker Assmaster Germanium and it gives a smoother tone with a more vintage feel for the guys wanting to replace their rare, beat up Brassmasters.Josh always wanted to make a delay pedal as well. He tracked down some bucket brigade chips and after back and forthing it with his dad, the supreme analog delay known as the Malekko Echo 600 was born. Packaged in a brightly colored metal box complete with Japanese writing and robot graphics, the Malekko Echo 600 was such a hit that a little brother was born this year, the Malekko Echo 300. This little 300ms delay shares all features with the Echo 600 except shorter delay times. Malekko – Serious Effects PedalsYou will find no standard pedals from Malekko. More likely, you will read instructions that are mispronounced and written in broken English, random letters attached to each pedal, and maybe even some false teeth inside? Yes it’s true, the boys at Malekko decided that humor is necessary in pedal design. The Japanese writing and graphics on the Echo 300 and 600 stem from the propensity of Japanese manufacturers trying to make their pedals look American. As the future comes on we expect to see more humor and pedals from Malekko Heavy Industry. Keep your eyes out for the Holley Erectus sample and hold pedal…it’s coming soon. |
