I got this and two other pedals. They got here today around 3 p.m. and it's 9 p.m. and I just stopped playing. I started with the tc delay on Echorec with almost infinite delays and lost myself in it. I ran into Peter Gabriel out by Neptune and then became Richard Wright for a while. I was making very authentic sounding early Floyd keyboard sounds endlessly. Then I switched to DMM with a short club type echo and used my tube screamer in front of it. It makes riffs and leads shine. This thing is perfect. Every setting sounds great. I am really happy with this pedal. (Posted on 3/1/14)
Unbelievable Value  (By Vinny)

I can't believe the sound quality and features of this thing, at this price point especially. I had never found a delay I wanted to keep before but this one opened up a whole new world of sounds for me and I can't stop playing it. I found the key to taming the Echorec was to set the toggle switch to 1/4 + 1/8 notes; the short bursts create a lovely ambience and don't get as out of control. The Deluxe Memory Man is contrastingly dark and mellow, sitting nicely behind your playing. The 2290 is crystal clear and the Analog and Tape are warm and organic. Just when I thought it couldn't get any better, I found the Tri-Chorus toneprint, and now I have a chorus pedal at the twist of a knob. Just amazing value. (Posted on 2/13/14)

The Complete Package  (By Robert)

I am really glad that I got this delay; it is the complete package. Everything you could possibly desire in a delay (except tap tempo) is in this thing. All of the delay settings are great, but I especially like the Echorec, analog, and slap presets. The Echorec absolutely nails Gilmour's tones in any era of Pink Floyd, and the toneprint allows you to get a variety of presets, including the Echoplex, chorus, flanger, and vibrato. All in all, this is one great bang for your buck-over 10 delays in one. I would recommend it for anyone and everyone. (Posted on 1/15/14)

This is the best delay I have ever owned. I own the Strymon Timeline, Eventide Timefactor and many other top notch delays. Nothing compares to the ambient tape sounds that come out of this beast. the 2290 setting is unmatched as well. the only drraw back is that it has not external tap. (Posted on 10/16/13)

replaced a Dl4 for this, worth it.  (By slidenate)

Just got my pedal in today, after 30 min in i realized that dumping my dl4 for this was well worth it, granted you lose control over the delay and expression abilities. But if you're like me and want a simple delay that seems to react to want you want naturally, this is it. the ER and DMM are awesome add ons and is well worth the couple extra bucks, as for the lettering issue some people have, it has not effected me cause after you mess with it you should have it to memory. Also dropping from the dl4 to this, killed a lot of space/weight from my pedal board. Only downside i can think of, you can use delay while in loop mode. but that can be fixed by a ditto thats on it's way. (Posted on 9/26/13)
Great Sound - Impossible to Read  (By CraigT)

The sound of this pedal is amazing and always impresses people when I use it. The only thing that I can complain about is that I can't read the settings, even in a lit room. I have 20/13 vision, I should be able to read this pedal with no problem, but the writing on this pedal is white against a medium yellow. Black writing would have been so much better. Forget seeing anything on this pedal in a live situation unless you have a flash light. (Posted on 9/24/13)

The echorec setting on this thing is incredible. Responsive and dynamic without losing tone. Well worth the modest $$$ for that alone. (Echoing previous reviews). Loop is basic, easy to use, only complaint is you can't use the Looper with the ER at the same time. (Posted on 9/11/13)

Absolutely astounding. As others have said, the Echorec setting by itself is worth the price of the pedal. My only complaint is an annoying one...change the color of the text!! Seriously!! The white lettering is a horrible choice logistically. In every situation that I've been in, I find myself squinting and tilting the pedal just so that I can read the text. (Posted on 8/30/13)

What a fantastic piece of guitar gear... I simply love every bit of it. First of all it sounds fantastic with lots of useful delay mods (I fell for ER-mod big time). Andy and Aaron did great! And for what price? This pedal is practically free compared to many others. I don't want to say cheap because that's a word you use on some cheap (and poor sounding) devices... this one is inexpensive. Killer tones, good for your wallet, it's solid and I'm sure it'll take night-after-night abuse well. I highly recommend this for all delay-seekers who want analog and "analog-ish" tones but don't want to spend hundreds and hundreds of bucks for 3-4 different pedals. Go for it! (Posted on 7/29/13)
Kinda Wiggy, But Great Overall!  (By The Spacepope)

I got my Alter Ego a couple months ago, and now it is the only echo/delay/looper on my board. The factory settings are versatile enough, but once you utilize the TonePrint presets it just blows everything else away. The TonePrint smartphone app is ingenious. My favorite settings are the Echorec and Tape settings are my favorite, but the Reverse and Modulation settings are fun too. There's not a lot of depth to the Looper, but it does come in handy. My only complaint stemmed about 2 weeks ago. I thought it was eating batteries at a ridiculous rate (even for a delay pedal), and then it just stopped taking juice from batteries altogether. I started using a power supply and all was well, but it was still an issue I had to mention here. Overall, this is another fantastic t.c. product that I would highly recommend to anybody in need of a super versatile echo/delay! (Posted on 7/12/13)

I had two delay/echo pedals already before getting this ( a Hardwire and a Digitech multi effects.) Both have some nice sounds but after getting this, it is usually my "go to" pedal for Gilmourish and other spacey sounds I like to experiment with. Thanks TC and PGS! (Posted on 7/9/13)

The delay is amazing. I won't address all the thing's merits as you can clearly see them listed everywhere. But if you want to read which setting you're on and the lighting isn't just right then forget about precision and jump to guess work. The white text gets lost in the mustard yellow in direct sunlight, soft yellow light of a dank bar room, or with bad eyes standing above it.

Would I buy it again? Hell yeah, I would. It is, somehow, cheaper than the regular Flashback delay. Who knew? I just wish the text were a darker colour. (Posted on 6/17/13)

Just great, pro-quality sound and usabilty for me who needs to access different kinds of delays. All the delay models in it are good. I personally love the Binson Echorec model in it and have found the Toneprint download of Joe Perry's Lead Delay to be quite uesful. And for under $200! We are in the golden age of gear! I was sitting on a fence about this pedal after reading some of the comments which indicated the Echorec setting was too modulated and couldn't be controlled. Well, I went ahead and bought it and I'm really glad I did. I agree with Brad above in saying the ER setting is worth the price of this pedal. Pro Guitar Shop and TC Electronic did an awesome job with this setting alone. It's perfect. I've already gotten lost in it for hours. Great job, you guys! Thank you. As for the other settings... all cream on top. Really nice work on the Deluxe Memory Man too. This pedal has quickly become one of my favorites. Keep collaborating, PGS and TCE. What's next?! I have been waiting for years for a decent "remake" of the Binson Echorec, and I am happy to say that this pedal delivers as well as I could have hoped. In very little time I was able to tune into the right tone for a live 69 version of Cymbaline just using this pedal and a Throbak overdrive. It is a great pedal and I highly recommend it. This was really worth the Echo Rec setting alone. I have always been on the look for one and finally I have one without the big price tag. It nails that Gilmore sound and more. Best Delay I have ever purchased. May have to buy another just incase I need a back-up. Five Stars (Posted on 3/20/12)

TC Electronic Alter Ego Flashback Delay

A joint collaboration between TC Electronic and Pro Guitar Shop, the Alter Ego Delay is a new take on the very successful TC Electronic Flashback.  Featuring two new presets modeled after a couple classic delays: the Binson Echorec, and the EHX Deluxe Memory Man.

Written by Aaron Miller, Founder of PGS

In February of 2010 TC Electronic flew Andy and I to the TC Electronic headquarters in Denmark.  Andy went along to create a number of Toneprints, and I was presented with the possibility of a custom Flashback.  I saw this as a really fun project to work on.  We get to do some really cool custom products with our manufacturers, and it ‘s the part of my job that I enjoy the most.  I mean really, who get's to do this kind of stuff?

After spending about 30 minutes with the Toneprint software, I realized that this software could create nearly any sound that you want it to.  My mind began to race with the possibilities, and I knew relatively quickly what we would create.

Being a complete delay geek, I own so many delays that it’s quite frankly embarrassing.  There is no excuse for it it’s an addiction.  There are two delays that I own that I consider some of my most prized possessions.  Very dear to my heart are my original Binson Echorec, and a vintage Electro Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man.

The Echorec

In the mid 80’s I was a teenager in high school and I had just discovered Pink Floyd.  I remember coming home from school everyday for weeks and sitting in my room and listening to Dark Side of the Moon on my gigantic Sony Walkman.   I barely knew how to play guitar back then, but later on in life when I was gigging in Portland I had the opportunity to pick up a Binson Echorec .  I couldn’t resist the chance to have one of those rare units that Gilmour had made famous.

After I had the Echorec for a few years it began to develop a very unique modulation that I fell in love with.  Typically when you think of delay and modulation you think of a chorusing effect. My unit developed more of a vibrato than a chorus.  On lower settings it just added a very subtle 3D effect, but if you would crank the volume (mix) it would give you a nice warble, giving you a slight leslie type effect.   This is what we modeled the ER setting of the Alter Ego after.  You will notice this warble at around 300ms repeat times.   It morphs into some great swirling upper harmonics at higher delay time settings.

The DMM Setting

The other delay that fits into my all time favorites category is the Electro Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man.  I have had one of the early models for years and it is a delay that I continue to come back to.  The DMM is a classic delay that everyone is very familiar with. We aren’t the first to model it, but I think we did a pretty darn good job of capturing the original sound.  We really focused on capturing the nuances of the echo and mimicking the unique decay heard in it's repeats. The DMM setting is based upon my Memory Man pedal.

One thing I do want to say about the Alter Ego pedal is that we aren't claiming that it's better than the original Flashback.  It was just intended to be an alternative to the original Flashback pedal with a couple of unique presets not found on the original.  This pedal was a labor of love for the PGS crew and me, and we really enjoyed putting the project together.

Operation on the Alter Ego is identical to the TC Electronic Flashback with the exception of the DMM and ER settings.

The instruction manual for the TC Alter Ego/Flashback Delay is available from the TC Electronic website.
