Amazing delays, great price, lacking features...  (By Scranton Styfle)

First and foremost, I love the delay models this pedal offers. Add to that the customization of tone prints and you have an instant win. And for $270? It's a steal.

However, there are some key features that this pedal lacks. I don't think I need to address the three presets functionality, as that's pretty obvious to anyone looking at this pedal. If you need more than three presets and you hate making manual adjustments on the fly, this pedal is probably not for you.

No Global Tap: Every time you change a preset or make a manual patch selection, your tap tempo immediately switches to the pre-programed BPM. This makes it hard to switch delay types during songs, as you'll have to keep re-tapping your tempo. The only times BPM settings are stored is when recalling one of your three presets, which still isn't useful when you switch between delays.

No BPM Display: I didn't think this would be a big deal, but I actually miss this a lot. I found it extremely useful to tap BPM's between songs or before the current song has ended. With a readout, this was easy. Without a readout you can only guess. That's especially hard when you're starting a song.

Tap Tempo Light: The light indicating the repeat tempo isn't locked to what you're tapping. It actually displays the placement of the repeats. For example, you're tapping quarter notes while it displays dotted eighth notes.

Looper: I have a looper already. Most people end up getting multiple loopers built in as secondary functions to other pedals. I will never use this looper, but it will forever occupy a dedicated looper knob and switch on this pedal. I would rather have a pedal that was an inch less wide.

Toneprint Function Limited: I love the idea of toneprints. I love the editor on the computer. I was super disappointed to learn I couldn't customize any of the delays exclusive to the Alter Ego. Sure, I could make custom toneprints based off all the original TC Electronics delay types, but I didn't buy this pedal for those, I bought it for the Alter Ego exclusive delays. Hopefully this will change in the future.

All of this being said, I still love my Alter Ego x4. I replaced my Eventide Timefactor with it. I just wish it was a little more thought out pertaining to certain features. (Posted on 8/28/14)

I love the pedal. Just wish they made the modulation adjustable either thru more knobs on the exterior or internal trim pots. On many of the effects its just to much, would be wonderful if it could be made to be a bit more subtle when you needed it. (Posted on 8/23/14)

What a wonderful pedal it sounds fantastic and is my only delay I will need. The modulation is right on the money and I have been writing new material thanks to this delay. Great Bang for the Buck (Posted on 8/19/14)

Between the vintage delays toneprints and the 4 spots for make your own or download toneprints this unit is a workhorse. The controls are easy to dial in and having such vintage sounds is a mind blower. The modulation dialed in a very tasteful way and the unit in stereo is a wonderful thing in itself. I had a flashback and sold it to get this unit. The AEx$ is a great value and has sparked some great song ideas. The EPEX2 and SECHO setting are worth the price by themselves. Good job PGS and now please give us an Alter Ego Reverb. (Posted on 8/19/14)

If you play lots of covers and want the right sounds this is the pedal for you. In comparison with its sister pedal the flashback delay, the Alter Ego more vintage sounds and its easy to operate.. I have a delay built into a Boss GT6, its apples and oranges. (Posted on 7/2/14)

AMAZING DELAYS!

Yesterday I got my Alter Ego x4 and the only thing I can say and what little I've explored, is that they are the best emulations delays band I've heard in a long time ... I dare say that it will have Vintagemente kicked the Timeline: p ...

I received my Alter Ego x 4 yesterday and could not be happier. I have numerous other high quality delay pedals including the Empress VM Super Delay and found this pedal much more intuitive to use. The sound quality of the delays and the ease of use were fantastic - plus its great to have all the banks and space to save other tone print delay sounds from the TC website. The looper is cool to use at home for jamming out riffs and layering - not sure how practical it would be for live use though. The only thing I would change is the ability to control either the tone of the repeats (brighter/darker) or the intensity of the modulation to really hone in on the sound you are looking for - although I think this may also be do-able via TC software. All in all a kick-ass delay which will definitely be staying on my pedal board. (Posted on 6/19/14)

I've gone through so many delay pedals, it's just not funny. Not to be all 'analog is better', but this thing really sounds so digital. More so even than the Echo Park delay, and that's saying something. Save your money and grab a couple of the Mooer or other Chinese pedals that are doing the same thing, for a heck of a lot less. Not only is it one of the best looking pedals I've ever owned, the thing sounds incredible. I played it with my band last night and it sat in the mix fantastic. Some of the presets seemed to have pretty heavy modulation when on it's own, but in a live context it was fantastic. Rich, warm, complex, I love this thing. (Posted on 6/17/14)

I have had the pedal for a couple of days now. All I can say is wow! This thing has some serious vibe going on. This is not an understated pedal. The delay's have a very unique character. I find it very inspiring to play. It takes me in new directions of creativity. I absolutely love the thing. (Posted on 6/16/14)
Ambient Goodness  (By Suddhachitta)

The delay effects don't just sound amazing they sound very close to the original sounds which they are aiming at emulating. The extra features added to the classic effects also increase their usability greatly. However I don't understand the significance of having a looper in it. Especially since the delay and looper modes have to be manually toggled instead of with a footswitch. Thus creating ambient sounds in a live situation using the delay effects from the pedal and looping them is not possible. One would require a separate looper pedal for it, which I don't think is unreasonable considering most guys doing ambient music have dedicated looper pedals. I think it would have made a lot more sense to have only the delay effects in it and reduce the price to something around $200. Then it would have been the preferred delay pedal for anyone looking for something more than a DD-7 like pedal. (Posted on 6/12/14)

To be honest I didn't find their new delay/echo options that compelling. I think the original Alter Ego does the job just fine and has the better PGS DMM and Bison emulations. If you need the x4 configuration it is probably a better option than the Flashback x4. If you don't, better to stick with the smaller footprint and lower price of original Alter Ego. You'll still have access to the hundreds of Tone Print options, the superior Bison and DMM options and the ability to modify any and all of them as well as create your own via their software. YMMV...... (Posted on 6/8/14)

TC Electronic Alter Ego X4 - Space Echo Preset

Since man first put signal to magnetic tape, countless engineers have dedicated myriad hours to as many refinements. Since the production of the first compact standalone delay machine for musicians—the Maestro Echoplex—much time has been spent perfecting the delay effect, one of the most ubiquitous sounds in musical history.

It is with that level of care that we at Pro Guitar Shop approached the design of the Alter Ego X4. Starting with the acquisition of several vintage delay units three years ago, we undertook the Alter Ego X4 project in the most organic way possible—deriving sounds from the actual units to be modeled. Several classic units are represented within the newest Alter Ego: From classic units such as the Binson Echorec and the Roland RE-301 Space Echo to more obscure pieces such as the Watkins Copicat and the Tel-Ray Super Organ Tone, every flavor of echo is represented from every era of the delay continuum.

The process of developing the algorithms of the new X4 took over a year's time. A group effort, each setting was painstakingly dialed in, fine-tuned with an array of guitars, compared with the original unit, and then shelved. Some time later, the algorithm would be unearthed and the process began anew with fresh ears. If it wasn't right, the algorithm was tweaked until it was, then shelved again. As time went on, the time between revisions became longer and longer. After several iterations of this, the adjustments became fine enough to where they became trivial. It is then that we knew we were finished, and each mode now stands in its current form. When the project was completed, we unanimously agreed that the Alter Ego X4 had met the credo that we had started with: "This is the delay pedal that WE would want."

Keeping in the tradition of the Flashback X4, the other controls of the Flashback X4—including the four user-assignable TonePrint settings, subdivisions and looper mode—remain unchanged. The unit is true bypass, with standard 9v DC operation and 300mA current draw.
