Tone Report DIY - Muff Fuzz

Please note: This DIY kit is meant as a companion piece to the Tone Report article found in the issue number listed on the kit you receive. All of the assembly instructions can be found in the companion article as well. Additionally, you will have to cut the supplied stripboard to the specs listed in the layout diagram, which is found in the Tone Report article.

Have you ever tried to buy pedal parts online? It’s a mess. Unbelievably, electronic components are used in many other fields aside from guitar pedals, with many more diverse applications. With that said, these other applications need to be operated at extreme temperatures, ultra-high voltages, and many different wattages. If you’ve ever bought resistors from the Internet, and the ones that showed up were giant white bricks of sandstone instead of the little blue striped fellas you’ve seen in your pedals, you’re not alone. There’s a lot to chance.

This is why we’ve created DIY kits for you to build our Tone Report pedals along with us! Each kit contains all the parts you see in the Tone Report DIY articles, and the finished product will exactly resemble the one built in the corresponding issue. If you’ve ever heard the sound clips in Tone Report’s DIY articles and wish you could build one yourself but the part buying is too tedious or confusing, this is the solution you’ve been waiting for.

The parts included are all top-quality, featuring rugged Alpha footswitches and potentiometers, Topmay film capacitors, premium transistor sockets that grip the parts tight, and a powdercoated enclosure. The kit only requires that you have the necessary tools to build the pedal, including a soldering iron and wire cutters/strippers. No returns are accepted on these kits for any reason.

This particular kit is for our version of the 1969 Muff Fuzz, featured in Issue #189. The original was a plug-in unit that was about one-quarter muff, resembling a more traditional two-transistor fuzz, but with clipping diodes. The original was configured in such a way that stacking was an impossible feat, and only one knob was available: Volume. Our version adds three knobs: A Fuzz control, a Tone control and a cool Gate control that leans the circuit out but doesn’t starve it of voltage, giving it a higher-headroom starved sound. Super cool!

Each Muff Fuzz kit includes:

Electrical components

  • 1x 750R resistor
  • 1x 2.2k resistor
  • 1x 4.7k resistor
  • 1x 10k resistor
  • 1x 51k resistor
  • 2x 100k resistor
  • 1x 3.3nF capacitor
  • 1x 22nF capacitor
  • 2x 100nF capacitor
  • 1x 10uF capacitor
  • 1x 47uF capacitor
  • 2x 2N5088 transistor
  • 2x 1N914 diode
  • 1x 2kB potentiometer
  • 1x 10kB potentiometer
  • 1x 100kA potentiometer
  • 1x 500kB potentiometer
  • 2x transistor sockets (cut from SIP sockets)
  • 4x potentiometer dust caps
  • 1x stripboard

Hardware

  • 1x enclosure
  • 4x knobs
  • 1x LED
  • 1x LED bezel
  • 1x 3PDT switch
