Great pedal, great features @ a great price  (By JFROCKON)

This pedal has way more features than I need. But, it has nice sounding easy to program delays. NO noticeable hiss from mine. I use a high gain system too. 30 programmable slots, how cool is that? A real great unit. (Posted on 5/10/14)

This is meant to be a very helpful, but critical, review for musicians who are live performers. If you are not a live performer, perhaps these issues won't bug you. However, that doesn't mean the issues DON'T EXIST. THEY DO. If you are a live performer, it's important you know these things before you purchase, because they may be deal-breakers. There are a lot of cool functions in this pedal (many you won't use), but here are just three reasons why I (and many other live musicians) find this pedal to be "no-go" for stage use. A simple coding fix could address all of these, but Vox has not responded to these usability issues. I removed this pedal from my board after playing 4 live shows with it.

1) Tap tempo does not work without a delay engaged. That's right, you can't "tap in" with your drummer before turning a delay preset on. This is simply poor engineering. If your delay is supposed to be sync'd to the music, you have to start tapping immediately after engaging it, and EVERYBODY can hear it. When you use a non-digital setting (tape, analog, etc.), tapping the tempo switch introduces the notorious pitch-shifting garble-garble. Other tap-tempo delay pedal alleviate this problem by allowing you to set the tempo BEFORE engaging a delay. Unfortunately, Vox decided to skip this functionality.

2) Tap tempo is not universal, and is hard-coded not to be. That means if you'd like to use a 1/4-note delay for the chorus, then you want to jump into a dotted-1/8 setting for the bridge, your tempo does not transfer. You have to tap it out (see #1 for the garble-garble that will once again find its way to your listener's ears). If you use more than one delay type in a song, this is a deal-breaker.

3) Unusable high-freq hiss. I have owned lots and lots of delays over the years, from cheapo Boss to TC Electronic and Eventide. After testing this delay alongside others in a dedicated true-bypass looper, I can confidently say it has far and away the worst hiss I have ever heard coming from a digital pedal, even compared to other delays within this price range. Will it drive you crazy? Maybe, maybe not; depends on how badly you've blown your eardrums so far! But it WILL require your sound-guy or recording technician to throw a gate on your channel to alleviate the hiss when you're not playing. Not good.

In a nutshell, if you LOVE the Line6 DL-4, you *might* like this pedal from a usability perspective; it will feel somewhat familiar. As an interface designer, however, I feel confident saying that there are A LOT of usability issues that could have been fixed here. Perhaps you will like this pedal; but perhaps you won't. Try one first, and don't just listen to the sounds. Read the manual; try it as if you were playing live; then decide from there. Perhaps you'll disagree with me, but at least you will be more informed of the hurdles that are preventing this pedal from becoming a cult-favorite. (Posted on 4/27/14)
