The power switch on my unit was very poor quality. Had a very gritty feel to it and had to be pressed just right or several times to activate the pedal. Not really impressed with the sound of the pedal either.
ProGuitar on the other hand was great. Stood behind this product and allowed a no hastle return. I will do business with them again.

I ended up going with a Strymon Sunset and get better fuzz tones out of it than the Carcosa even though it is technically an overdrive. Sad. (Posted on 4/11/17)

Really versatile fuzz pedal! Does the heavy stuff great but can get some classic fuzz sounds as well. Not sure about the build. It's doesn't seem as sturdy as some of my other pedals, but no problems yet with it. For the price it can't be beat. Buy one!! (Posted on 3/16/17)

Now, I will not claim to be a fuzz aficionado or traditionalist, but I've been looking for a versatile fuzz that isn't big bucks because it's "boutique" or "magic" or "mojo" anything really. I've had a Hoof Reaper (great, but too big/expensive), Fulltone 69 (awesome for fuzz face, but that's it), Terminal (surprisingly versatile for guitar and bass, but didn't quite cover enough ground). They're all gone to a better place now.

Anyway, for a $79 sale I had to try the Carcosa, and wow, it's Tonebender rude, it's fuzz face smooth, it's Jax/Maestro brittle, it's velvety, it zippers with the best of them. I don't think I've found all the sounds in this thing yet. Digitech/DOD is on a serious roll. (Posted on 1/4/17)

This fuzz has usable tones from the minimum to maximum settings. Even at the far extreme, most blown out gated fuzz setting, the pedal remains stable and totally playable! Makes for a great low-mid gain overdrive as well! Very much worth the asking price - even if you don't usually like fuzz pedals. (Posted on 1/4/17)

Best of everything that's Big Muff/Fuzz Face and everything in between

The ability to turn down the guitar volume and change the character is something I've wanted for decades.

I have tried it on both standard guitar and lap steel. It sounds great on both. The fattest Lindley tone ever!

I really like having the ability to have it go from chunky chord work to "on the edge of sputter" for single line stuff all with the turn of a knob on the guitar. (ok, maybe a bit over the edge, but it sounds so good!)

PGS had it for 80 bucks......so glad I jumped on it. (Posted on 1/4/17)
Hard to turn it off  (By RM)

The Carcosa has a lot of range - almost all usable. It SERIOUSLY likes playing with other gain pedals - I've found that using a Mooer Cruncher at about 40% drive into the Carcosa at about 50% on both drives is just dripping with tone - hard to turn off, hard to stop playing.

In my application there are a few analog pedals up front for modification and warming of digital magic. This pedal works amazingly well in front of a Kemper as well.

My ratings: 4 stars on Quality because there are things available with higher quality components, fit and finish - this is on par with MXR gear. 4 stars on price because it's not in the "buy it even if you don't need one" range. 5 stars on value because compared with the rest of the available effects you'll likely get more "on" time with this than most. (I'm an Engineer - if you give 5 stars as a typical, you have no room to communicate the true stand outs - please consider this a VERY favorable review.) (Posted on 12/12/16)
Awesome for bass  (By Christopher)
Value
Quality

If you've ever talked with a bassist about any sort of gain pedal, we're picky. Too many roll off low frequencies; you end up sacrificing heft for bite. The Carcosa does this, too, but not nearly as much as a lot of other fuzzes on the market, and its incredible versatility is worth losing a little bottom end. Gated, sputtering fuzz, check; woolly overdrive, check; washed out sustain for days, check. If I want to sound like an old-school garage punk record, I just keep the hi-cut open (another reviewer mentioned a light octave element; I think this might be more pronounced on the bass because I definitely hear one with the hi-cut open). If I want to pull back on the bright and get a smoother bass-y tone, just roll it down. The controls are very interactive, and the two modes give it very different personalities; I'm sure there are fuzz tones in it I've yet to discover.

It costs nothing compared to the vast majority of fuzzes out there, and it's a DOD encased in a hunk of metal so I'd give it even odds that it will outlive me. (Posted on 11/30/16)

This fuzz is awesome and crazy versatile. Between the four knobs and a toggle you can get anything from treble booster to fat girthy overdrive tones to huge buzzy doomy stoner stuff to the "Satisfaction" fuzz sound to super sputtery splatty 60's biker movie fuzz and everything in between. Highly recommended. Any given boutique company could sell the same thing for $200 easy. DOD is turning them out for $99!!!! How cool is that? The case is sturdy aluminum (not plastic!) and the knobs and switch seem durable. The basic tone isn't your standard big muff or fuzz face too, so that's another plus as you probably don't have a fuzz that sounds quite like this one in your arsenal already.

If I have one nit to pick it's that the interactivity of the 4 knobs and toggle can make it a little harder to dial in than your standard "3 knobs and that's it" style pedal, but I really can't complain given that most of the random settings you could dial in are still generally quite ear pleasing, it might just take you a minute to get it to be *perfectly* what you're looking for.

But yeah, buy one. I really never thought I'd get a fuzz this cool for a Benjamin. Thanks Tom Cram and thanks PGS! (Posted on 11/17/16)

I've used it with bass, only. There's alot of options. I don't think they all work as good for lowenders as much as guitarists, but for $100 (or less) this is a killer pedal with a pretty wide range of sounds, and each end of the spectrum is better than the other.

Definatly keeps plenty of bass at the lower settings, and it does prefer rounds to flats. Haven't tried with active pups, but it's pretty good with the different passives I've thrown at it.

The pedal itself is solid. Feels like quality. I haven't opened it, and I assume it's all SMD and that's fine for what I paid. Pretty sure I could also use this to drive nails in a pinch.

I do not profess to be a fuzz guru. I do own a few nice fuzzes, and on a dollar per fuzz basis, this cant be beat. i paid $100 dollars more for an amptweaker tight fuzz which is extremely versatile (as is the carcosa), but doesnt have the extremes of the carcosa. in have a pigtronix polysaturator which bills itself as a distortion box but has quite a range of fuzz qualities that are awesome; the ranges of tone are similar to that of the carcosa but not as good in total fuzz range. my soundblock distortion (source audio) approximates the fuzz spitting out all over the place that the carcosa does, but once again it is more of a distortion unit. my 'swollen pickle' has serious range of sound, but is a little thin toned (maybe that is why bass players love it) compared to this carcosa. finally, i deem my WMD geiger counter as having the most fire-breathing fuzz i've heard, but the carcosa is in the same ballpark and has more fuzz options. throw in the zvex fuzz factory for "wild sounds" and maybe this can give that pedal a run in that arena. after the dust settles, the carcosa is cheaper than any of the others listed here, and it gives the widest range of fuzz options. if you have any of the pedals I mention here (and they are ALL great), the carcosa is not redundant and may very well be more useful to you. I recently got this pedal with the $20 off coupon. It sounds great! I can come close to quite a few Hendrix, Fripp, and Torn tones, but more importantly I am hearing new sounds coming from my fingers. The Before and After knobs interact wonderfully - I haven't experienced this flexibility with a fuzz before.

The one thing it doesn't have that some more modern fuzzes do is the ability to self-oscillate, a bit of a one-trick pony effect, but fun. Beyond that, those pedals didn't have the tone-shaping ability of the Carcosa.

I haven't gigged with it yet, but I am dying to! I am an improviser, and I imagine it will be great fun to easily change my fuzz tones through the course of a set.

This is the perfect fuzz pedal, Can get anything from subtle split to gated square wave tones. Works very well with other drive pedals after it and works well with even a buffer in front. For the price, this is a no brainer.

My only knock on it is that the graphics and overall look of the pedal is pretty hideous and the enclosure material feels a little cheap. If they improved those things though they could have charged double. So thank you hideous graphics for letting me get the perfect fuzz for under $100. (Posted on 11/10/16)

Outstanding quality, top-notch sounds and best $99 spent on a pedal ever. Period.

I'm really impressed.
Thanks PGS for this collaboration.

Got my Carcosa today, ripped the package open to give it a try. A quality build external, inside was the same. Only thing missing in the package was the documentation, which you can get on the DOD site. 4ma current draw, nice! The Carcosa is a beast of many uses. Need a treble boost, check Need a sustaining silky smooth fuzz that responds to volume controls, check Need that woody, squaking sputter..check again. Can cover a lot of ground with this fuzz, did not find anything I could not use...even oscillations at extreme settings were musical. Ran it into a clean solid state head.....perfect Ran it into an orange head in overdrive...perfect again. Amazing versatility in fuzz tones!  (By Jeff H)

I own dozens of gain pedals, but the Carcosa Fuzz was actually my first PGS purchase. There might be even more hype for this pedal but for the fact that it's currently a PGS exclusive. For $99, this is an incredible deal. Most fuzz pedals don't have this kind of versatility. My understanding is that it's based of a Maestro FZ-1, but there's also Muff sounds in there and gated sounds similar to a Fuzz Factory or EQD Dirt Transmitter. The "After" knob really turns it into several different pedals - on the lower settings, it's more of a crunchy low-gain sound, but it can get extremely saturated and even raucous on other settings.

I think the functioning of the hi-cut knob is my favorite feature. Some fuzz pedals don't even bother with a tone control, or have tone controls that don't do much. The Carcosa is actually capable of some pretty strong mid and treble frequencies, and then you roll off the high end using Hi-Cut for a nice smooth tone (without getting too muddy)

Finally, the Carcosa has TONS of output, and can be dialed in nicely to a variety of clean and dirty amps. I won't say that Carcosa has "cured" me of the need for other fuzz pedals, but it's pretty tough to imagine liking one as much as I like the Carcosa. (Posted on 10/21/16)

This is by far the best fuzz pedal I've ever had, and I had some. As it says on the ad, it can go from fat to splat and produce almost any fuzz, overdrive or distortion tones you can imagine, doing the job of many others similar pedals, for a very affordable price. The combination of the four knobs makes it a tweaker's heaven and you can't really get a bad sound out of it, even if you're willing to. Works great with any guitar on any amp. The DOD Carcosa fuzz is the first fuzz pedal I've had, that cuts through properly in a band mix on it's own. It's mean, tight and has very good string definition, despite being really thick sounding. It's loves single coils Telecaster tones as well as high output humbuckers and low tunings with plenty of complex riffs. You'll not lack saturation or a spot in the mix.

Super versatile, from mean, growly fuzz to splatty, gated mayhem.

Switches and knobs feel sturdy, but I'd prefer a housing with a little more heft to it - a little more weight, to enforce the allround solid feel of the pedal.

I can't recommend this enough. Give it a try. (Posted on 8/29/16)

This pedal is insane. 100 bucks - DOD LOLUMAD

The most important thing about using it with guitar is that you can get a usable tone in nearly every position of controls. Literally. You set pedal to desired setting, say, gated thin cutting fuzz : lots of after, mid before and highcut to the right, and then you just looking for the exact right tone with your volume and tone control on a guitar. It's that simple, omg.

And yeah, no worries about plastic case. And the artwork is really great. And the switch looks indestructible. And yeah - blue LED will hurt your eyes until you cover it somehow just to see what settings you are using.

I found this fuzz to be a joy to play. The key to it's unique fun experience is the "after" knob. While you can cover a lot of standard fuzz ground with this pedal that one knob, used in conjunction with the more standard parameters will take you into unexplored territory. Fuzz is one of those effects often mislabeled (too many "distortions" and "overdrives" are labeled "fuzz") and unfortunately, when properly labeled most seem to venture into the realm of "chaos" - aka"unusable". NOT so with the DOD Carcosa. This is one of the true fuzz units that both lives up to its label AND provides the user excellent control over its functions. The result? Well, it really depends on what you want, because you get multiple fuzz units with the Carcosa, from almost-over-the-top (but still controllable) mega fuzz to smooth, buttery, controllable fuzz reminiscent of the best of the tweaked Bosstone circuits of the 60's. So whether you are looking for the huge "crunch" of 4 speakers blowing concurrently or the smooth sound of a string quartet, the Carcosa Fuzz covers those tones and just about everything in between. A welcome "progression-by-regression" to the truly usable fuzz circuits of the past, with the precision of modern control. HIghly recommended. (Posted on 7/23/16)

DOD Carcosa Fuzz

Songs that the Hyades shall sing,

Where flap the tatters of the King,

Must die unheard in

Dim Carcosa.

DOD’s Carcosa fuzz began when a cross-country tone quest, that saw Tom Cram, the man behind DOD, traversing the country to explore the lost fuzz annals of the ‘70s—a time when so many brands were producing fuzz pedals that it was tough to keep track. Silicon transistors were relatively new (and cheap), and everyone wanted in on the action.

Maestro’s FZ-1 was a hallmark in fuzz, and though the company produced a ton of fuzzes after it, none gained as much acclaim. Tom Cram thought this was shameful and delved into the catalog. He returned from his pilgrimage with many spoils, among them an FZ-1S, a stout wedge enclosure billed by Maestro itself as a new fuzz sound that stood out from the mire of inferior ‘70s fuzz tones.

This adventure serves as the inspiration for the Carcosa—a dual-mode fuzz that does it all. Two modes—Hali and Demhe—serve as the heart and soul of this homage to vintage fuzz.

Hali mode gives players a lighter fuzz tone for amps that are already running hot, giving a gentle push not unlike a treble booster. This mode strengthens the highs and tightens them up to lend a little juice to darker pickups and amps.

Demhe mode is a raw, unbridled fuzz tone that pounds the front end of a whistle-clean amp. In this mode, the low-mids are accentuated and your guitar tone will stand head-and-shoulders above the mix in all situations.

Once you select the mode, the Carcosa is your oyster. The Before and After knobs work in tandem to coax all kinds of fuzz sounds from the Carcosa, while still staying true to its mode. The Before and After controls work as bias knobs which delivers a wide-reaching palette of tones in either mode. Both knobs are extremely interactive, with a near-infinite number of sweet spots throughout. When the After control is turned up higher than the Before knob, interesting textures leap out of the pedal and into your inspirational bank.

With every vintage-style fuzz, there are concerns of the tone becoming to “ice-picky” and the Carcosa takes care of that with a handy Hi-Cut knob, a powerful tone shaper with a deep and generous filter. This helps run the Carcosa alone without any tonal mismatches or as a makeshift EQ to prepare the signal for any pedals that follow it.

The "After" control commands a nifty biasing circuit that adjusts feedback and transistor bias simultaneously. When turned, a bit of white noise enters the signal but stops immediately when the knob is set. One might say that the crackling sound is ok—there's nothing wrong with the pedal.

The Carcosa’s Volume control has tons of output on tap, so don’t be afraid to use it to push your amp or other pedals. Don’t be afraid—let the fuzz envelop you.

DOD Carcosa Fuzz features:

  • Based on vintage silicon fuzzes of the ‘70s
  • Two distinct modes with two different frequency responses
  • Unique Before and After controls deliver several different fuzz tones
  • Hi-Cut knob tames any spikes in treble, prepping the signal
  • Loads and loads of output volume
